Home-built custom exhaust... Almost perfect
Hello all. I haven't posted a lot on this forum because I am super busy all the time. I decided you guys (and gals) should know that you can quit spending +/- $1K on aftermarket cans that are heavy and obtrusive, and don't sound all that great. I've built custom exhaust systems for every sports car I have owned or still own (3 MX-5's in varying trim levels, a 94 Toyota MKIV 2JZGTE, Saturn Redline<laugh>, and about 6 others), and I have figured out ways to cancel resonance and rasp completely and tune a very nice note. It's all about strategic placement of resonators, or baffles, that do not obstruct flow in any way (maybe ~2% drag loss, maybe..). I just chopped into the S2K's exhaust, and here's the outcome:
- Bent the pipe going into and coming out of the converter and turned it 40 degrees and angled it (there is a reason for this, too long to explain)
I didn't use a test pipe because I welded one in for "test" purposes and hated the "tinny" note.
- Left the stock resonator in place. Cut the pipe aft the "Y", and added a 5" weld-in resonator on both sides.
- Ran 2.5" pipe from the resonators to a set of 3.5" stainless resonated tips, 6" long, angled and rolled ends.
- Hung everything and tied up all seams
The result: +5WHP and +6LB-FT. The investment: $47.xx. (I guess this could vary depending on where you source materials)
The sound: Awesome. No offense to anyone, but I think it sounds better than ANY system I've heard on an S, online or in person.
It's mellow, low and barely louder than stock out of VTEC. Above 6K, it screams, but with NO rasp or distortion. Crystal clear and throaty. I'm going to post a vid ASAP for you to hear. 2002 AP1 Suzuka Blue, no mods other than this and a partial custom intake (by partial I mean I'm still using the stock lower air box assembly and K&N. I gained very little power with this mod, mainly a deep intake snarl in VTEC, and NO heatsoak). Anyway I though you guys should know this is possible. It doesn't net you as much HP or TQ as pricey aftermarket systems, but I PROMISE you will like the sound better (unless you're cat-less).
Good day all..

i've gotta see this and hear it too. the only real exhaust notes i liked for the s2k were the ones by hks/greddy/mugen. if you did it with less then that's a fantastic job. get those vids up!

I am going to upload pics and video tomorrow. I'm trying to figure out how to upload iPhone vids to the site. The exhaust looks OEM stock other than the fact that there aren't ugly canisters hanging down under the bumper. The only thing you see is part of the factory split piping near the suspension. I lined the tips up in the holes exactly symmetrical on both sides. They look like OEM 350Z tips, and fill the cutouts better than the OEM tips. I think you will approve
Oh, and the tips came from Summit Racing.

Posted an image of the intake mod: Still a semi-rough draft, not complete.. Free mod, works, so don't flame me too hard for it! Lol.
