Agreed with that. Also, now, in MA this is, dont know about the rest, but if your car has an aftermarket exhaust. There is a question on screen that asks to verify if the exhaust has been modified from original, to meet OEM sound levels (since they changed the laws regarding the "noise pollution"), and if they click yes, its an automatic fail. Something also changed with aftermarket taillights too, if they have been modified from original they have the right to fail you for that too.

PA did away with the sniffer test in most of the "populated" areas and only do OBDII testing. Some of the rural counties still have sniffer tests with a visual inspection. Any county with OBDII testing doesn't have visual inspection. No CEL, you pass

Can anyone from NY chime in on whether they go by CEL status or with sniffer tests?

In NY it's just a OBDII and visual inspection for emission.

Basically, if your car's not smoking and your CEL is good, you're fine.

Granted, I moved out of NY this past summer, but I don't think anything has changed in the last few months.

EDIT: No sniffer, but some inspection places are strict and will fail you if they see a missing cat or aftermarket exhaust...I'd say 80% will pass you as long as you're not blowing smoke out of your tailpipes.

I passed without them asking anything.... they took a mirror to check if I had a cat, but with the TP in place, they didn't bother asking.... good luck!!

CA ftmfl! I always wondered how guys with 500+ rwhp beasts passed this crap. Basically, with a testpipe, take it off and put the stock cat back on b4 the check? Should an aftermarket exhaust be taken off as well and replaced with the stock one? This sucks especially if you've gotten tuned
