Thumbs up K&N Drop In Filter (K&N E-2435)

Hi Guys

I accidently ordered the drop in filter and the FIPK... the dropin filter arrived two months before the expected date of the FIPK.

So I currently have it in my car.... I can't really hear the difference with the filter box cover on, but when I take it off, damn its loud. Really nice growl loud.... will I do any damage with running without the filter box cover? I love the sound.

I currently have a huge airintake pipe that runs from the bottom of the bumper to the open airbox to prevent heatsoak.

Just curious if its safe to run open until the FIPK arrives.

Thanks.

It is safe to run, but removing the filter box cover is KNOWN to lose hp.

Isn't the loss of HP because of heatsoak? I'll post a pic of what I've done to resolve the heatsoak.

IIRC the K&N FIPK doesnt come with a cover.

xrapidx,

you are right that the loss of HP is due to heatsoak. and the others are right that you wont cause any damage. at speed, the heatsoak is a minimal factor because of the constant change of air in the engine bay. however, it becomes a problem when sitting at a stop light or in very slow traffc.

the FIPK filter is uncovered, but it seals around the back and sides of the filter to prevent unwanted heat from the engine to cause heat soak.

with your setup, while im NOT critisizing your setup, i dont think it helps the problem. the only time it is providing cooler air to the engine is when you are moving. the air is being forced up the tube to the filter by the speed of the car. when standig still, the filter is grabbing air from the area surrounding the filter.

with that being said, if it where me, i would put the cover back on the box, and if you wanted to, you could cut a hole in the passenger side of the box to fit the tube, so that you still get the "ram air" affect from the tube.

hope this helped a bit.

Thanks... its only a temporary solution though, and I don't mind the advice, it all helps. I

was more worried about damage from not having a airbox cover on, and this filter allowing more air in than the stock one. As soon as the FIPK arrives, that setup is out.

I really love the sound though, hopefully the FIPK has a similiar sound.

Damage from an open filter? The only time you would do damage is no filter. Remember a filter is what all air passes thru covered or not.
