Default Modified OEM steering wheel

Hey guys, I'm on the hunt for a flat bottomed wheel for more leg room, but I'd like to keep cruise control and the airbag intact. I know theres the VGS wheel available, but I was only able to locate one for $600.

Then I can across a FS thread from a couple years ago, in which a member was selling his cut and re-welded OEM wheel. I emailed him, but he's yet to answer. So I made this thread to see if anyone else has done it?

Here's the thread for reference: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/833...teering-wheel/

Thanks guys!

Wow lucky you man

I tried PMing him but i guess his inbox is full.

I'll hit up my friend and see if he wants to help with this. He's got some skill with a welder. I just can't justify spending $600, then some more on a donor AP2 when this seems like a much cheaper option.

Did it help noticeably with leg room?

I did. Joe said that they just recovered it. The actual mod was done by the original owner.

Just wanted to throw out an update:

Got an AP2 steering wheel for a song last weekend, and took it to my buddy to chop and re weld the wheel together.

It turns out the steering wheel is made of aluminum, or some other non-ferrous metal, so he couldn't really weld it up that well. It's gonna get finished up today by a more experienced pipe fitter at his plant. I'll throw up some pics of the finished welds. Gonna be a little bit before I re-wrap it though.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up if they wanted to try this mod. I didn't think the steering wheel would be made of aluminum
