Default New Oil Filters, Hot Off the Line

Hey guys. So my uncle is an engineer for Purolator and he works in Aftermarket Product Development. He has been telling me for a few months now about a new filter they have been developing and testing, and today he brought me a box of them fresh off the production line.

He knows I always run Mobil 1 full synthetic in the S2000, and this filter is designed specifically for use with synthetic oil. In his words, based on laboratory tests this filter will hold more contaminants than other filters while maintaining the same flow with synthetic oil.

The filters appear to be very well made; the outside has non-slip textured paint to make installation and removal a bit easier, the element inside the filter is metal, the filter media is synthetic (NOT paper), and that synthetic media is backed with a wire mesh to help hold its shape and keep it intact over the life of the filter.

My uncle has been working for Purolator for a very long time (he also goes to SEMA every year for them ), and I have never seen him this excited about rolling out a new product. I have absolute confidence in his word when he tells me it will be a great filter for a high-performance engine such as the F20 running synthetic oil, and I can't wait to be (probably) the first S2000 to run it after my next oil change. They are also made here in my hometown of Fayetteville North Carolina, USA, and there is something to be said for that as well.

sounds great. Would love to see better pictures of the gasket sealing surface (is it rubber like most frams? or metal/metal like the PCX), and maybe another of the drain valve!

Cool that you have a connection like that.

Interesting that it's rated for 10k. It would be nice to run synthetic oil for long intervals and not worry about the filter.

Can you post a side by side size comparison photo(s) of this filter and the PCX? Also, is this filter specifically for the s2000 or several vehicles?

I tried to take some better photos for you, but it's hard to take a decent picture of the inside of the filter. I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but the gasket is rubber (same as on the Bosch Distance Plus I was using), and the backing behind the gasket is metal. The anti-drainback valve (the orange through the holes) is silicone. By drain valve I'm assuming you mean the by-pass? It's really hard to get a picture of that, but I tried... The cross-section on the box might have what you are looking for.

It's rated for 10k with reason. He hates the myth of the 3,000 mile oil change, even though it benefits his business. It's a tremendous waste of resources. His daughter (my younger cousin) has a 2008 Mustang V6, and he runs 12,500 mile oil change intervals in her car. He takes her filters back to the lab after he changes the oil and performs flow test and contaminant testing on them; there has never been a problem with either number at that interval. Her car has relatively low miles (<90k), but I know he uses a similar (if not longer) interval on the Envoy they have had for years, and it is now at nearly 250,000 miles with no motor issues. That said, I still change the oil in my S every 6,000 miles and make sure to maintain proper oil level within that interval.

Sounds like a good filter, but with a rubber gasket, make sure it is secured so it does not loosen as is the case with many rubber gasket filters, unlike the PCX

I don't have a PCX onhand for comparison photos, but I lined the new filter up next to a Bosch Distance Plus, a Mobil 1 Extended Performance, and a FRAM (which the P.O. included with the car and I won't use). Also, this is an aftermarket filter, so it is designed and tested for use on multiple vehicles. As long as proper flow rate and contaminant holding levels are achieved I wouldn't be wary of that. All these filters can be used on multiple vehicles.

I'm not an expert, but I don't really see what the difference is between the gasket on these two filters. They are essentially the exact same thing unless I'm missing something.

Not my photo, but here's a PCX:

Looks like a mix of the older side pureone filter with the newer style, any idea when these are hitting the stores?? I use to run nothing but pure one on my turbo integraand civic but my s2k gets only oem or mobile, the reason wy is because less than a year ago in shop class we had to cut in half a great amount of filters and check what the diffrance was. Andn the pureone & classic were the Same thing, only diffrance was the o-ring was a diffrant color andpureone has the grip control. Are these replacing the pureone or just an upgrade??, can't wait to see em in person!

I just talked to my uncle, he said they ought to start getting to store shelves any day now. They are not replacing the PureOne, they are an additional filter in the lineup made specifically for vehicles running synthetic oil.

If you would, ask your uncle if they make a oversize filter with the new synthetic media(in the size of a Baldwin B202 oil filter).
