Default Noise with gears

I am thinking about putting 4.57s in my ap1 and I understand that they produce a whine withing certain rpm ranges. From ap1 owner who run these gears, if you daily the car is it annoying? Also if i have a loud exhaust (trust ti-r) will I even be able to hear the whine over the exhaust? How loud is this whinning noise??

Edit: also did you notice a big increase in acceleration?

thanks,

Frankie

I experienced the whine from about 42-49 mph. When first installed it was more pronounced and concerned me a bit. The Tech's at Richmond assured me that it is normal and not something to worry about. As the gears became more broken in (about 1500 miles now) the whine has gone away for the most part. It also lessened as the diff warmed up when driving. The difference in crispness of acceleration is wonderful, as is the improved low end performance. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Pretty much that....

I've found around 50ish to be the worst....not too noticeable in/around town.

The S sees the highway VERY rarely, and if I did drive it a lot, I could see how it could get annoying. Its not that common of a mod so it may be tough to find someone with them to see for yourself...

as far as the gains go, highly recommended. The car feels much better

Same here,with Richmond gears.

At first,I was worried, about the whine;you can definitely hear it.(even with a Comptech exhaust, and test pipe...)

I even drove around with X-Viper,(Dave.),in my car,at the Gathering,in Lake George, and he assured me,that the noise was normal.

He suggested to use Amsoil 75W140 gear oil,and it's a lot better now.
I would do it again, anytime;very well worth it.

I'm hoping the Amsoil lowers my gear whine. I have the fluid right here just waiting for it to be nicer out to change it.

i am thinking about doing this mod in the future also, for people with the 4.57 gear what rpm are you at cruising at 80 mph. reason i ask is cause i go on the freeway quite a bit and i think the 4.77 gear will put me too close to vtec cruising

I am running the 4.77's in my AP1 and its NOT as bad as people claim it to be. 80mph on the freeway is around 5200RPM. You don't hit 6K until 93ish. IMO, I don't think you will see that much of an increase in acceleration with 4.57's.

I love my 4.77's.

Geesh Nate, that is one heck of a whine! Next to that my car sounds like a new Lexus inside.
