paint job?
it depends, you can get crap SS to high end product, the high end job will have more prep, more post paint process as well(to taken out the urtherane wave, check out economy car's reflection next to a 70k benz)
don't even try to prep the car if you don't already know how to paint a car, i am telling you from experience. there's nothing wrong with prepping your own car if you know what you are doing but 99% of people have no idea what to do or what to use.
the chances are you dont have the right tool also, stuff like compressor, D/A, foam block, mask, etc.
once a while you'll get some guy just want to get paint work done, before i lay the paint i will pretty much tell him/her that i will not warranty the paint finish if the failure are from poor or improper work work. stuff like crap can RTS primer, cheap body filter and paint layers build up are like ticking time bombs, sometime they will not fail, sometime you'll get a bubble or bondo crack in your car in a year. We do this for covering our arses for something the customer did. it happens before and unfortunately i can't do anything about it.
if you rolling in a "prepped" car with RTS enamel primer, bondo brand filler i will charge you alot more just to undo the "damage".
on the high end job you'll get everything, from bumper adhesion promoter, flex agent, sealer, epoxy, rust tread and hand cut and buff. the cost of paint job will be going to prep work, material to post paint process. I can be honest with you, if you pay for it i don't mind cutting the whole car by hand, you can have a finish better than a 10k factory benz paint job as long as you pay for the labor and cost.
You get what you pay for in the world of automotive finishes.
<--does body repair, paint, prep, detail and frame work as hobby(as well as engine work)
check out the miata in my sig, did a color change(red to bmw jetblack) in about 2 weeks. About 5-600 in material cost.

Don't bother doing anything yourself to "Start it off". The shop will probably charge you the same and will have a smile on their faces 'coz you did some of the work. I'm sure you have heard this before. You get what you pay for when it comes to paint jobs. This means, Maaco, Earl Shrieb, or any of those guys are out of the question.
i dont even know what kinda of stuff they use, the cheapest pos BASF paint you can get runs you about 300 buck with all the primer and clear. their cheapest paint job runs about 250 in one day.
all they do is sand the surface with a d/a and runs scrotch grey pad over the jam start spraying
