Default plasti dip wheels black with red lip

i recently purchased 5 cans of black, 3 cans of clear, and 1 can of red plasti dip.. i plan to paint my wheels, emblems, and my apr style lip once it arrives. i'm going to do the emblems and lip black with clear on top, no big deal. i'm wanting to plasti dip the wheels black with a red lip, with clear on top of that.

some of the finish on my ap1 wheels is chipped and scratched, so i plan to use stripper on them to get that off, followed by cleaning with acetone and laying down the plasti dip.. what i'm not sure about doing is how to pull off the red lip. should i lay down the lip first in red, then let it dry, tape it off, spray the wheel in black, then dry and pull back the tape? my concern is that when i peel back the tape i'll peel back the plasti dip on the wheels with it.

also gonna spray the center caps black and apply some red vinyl honda h's that i bought from ebay, and use some black lugs, gonna look sweeeet

just wondering if someone out there with more experience with the stuff has any suggestions

To actually answer your questions if you are going to strip the wheels I suggest just painting them. It will be easier and come out nice. I think at the very least you will have to paint the red since I think the plasti dip will peel off wih the tape ESP around the edge. Another issue you will have is when you get new tires the plastidip around the edge will likely have small pieces peel off wih the tire. That is what happened with mine.

I have the red h emblems from eBay on mine so you are good there. I hope that helps but let us know how it goes.

The thing about plastidip is that it comes off easily. If you want to paint it, paint it the color you'd like. If, later, you decide on a different color, repaint it then.

The great thing about plastidip is that you get second chances, but you won't need it if you do it right the first time.

For badges it works great but I don't think it would hold up well on your wheels or lip. My gf just plastidipped her mkv gti badges and they came out great.

unless you can paint the wheels all black w/ the plasti dip, make a cone that masks off a perfect circle around your wheel's face and hit that area with the red paint, i foresee a lot of cursing and an eventual submission to over spray. best of luck

i guess i'll just try on one wheel first, if it doesn't work, i'll either plasti dip em all black, or just paint em so i can get the red lip i'm after... i do have a crappy little magenta colored toyota that would much better flat black, hm....

just get the professionally done and dont spray bomb your wheels =\ powder coat is the only way you will get a nice durable finish that will actually last. other then that that plasti stuff will rub off and look like poo poo. the only thing that it is good for is maybe a badge and thats it.

lots of people disagree, powdercoating costs from i've been able to find about 75 bucks a wheel, not gonna spend 300, might as well buy some aftermarket wheels instead

and again, if it rubs off or looks bad i'll peel it off and go a different route, i was really looking for suggestions on how to pull off a black wheel and a red lip with the stuff, not be told to paint, powdercoat, etc. instead

i do appreciate the input however
