Default A question about thermostat

Hello friends,

Since i was getting an engine overheating issues last summer thanks to our hell summer (40degrees at night and 55 to 60 degrees at day time) and my car is turbo charged. I blew the head gasket within 30days of daily driving ( no boosting ).

That made me search for a thermostat which opens faster than the OEM thermostat. While searching the net i found many brands such as mishimoto, mugen, spoon & J's racing. What i noticed that on each site i enter they are mentioning a deferent numbers! which made me confused! i dont know which site is saying the truth.

Some say it opens at 63 and when i enter another site on the same thermostat brand its says 78 and on the third site its says 80!

Please guys. If any of you experienced this before? Please let me know what to buy. I want the coolest thing which opens at 63 or 65 max.. Our weather here is just like hell and i dont have another car to use!

Are you running the stock radiator? The stock radiator is a one core design so no matter how fast the tstat opens, it'll eventually heat up again, you're just delaying the inevitable. I'd think you should just get a better radiator (mishimoto, koyo) and get a good fan/shroud system. If you're still having problems heating, look into a lower t-stat.. the lower temp tstats give you different numbers because thats the temperature they fully open at. Its actually best to have a as hot as possible without overheating Tstat in, as our engine doesnt like being cold (thats why it prevents vtec engagement til 3 bars for us AP1s)

basically:
1)your engine is creating more waste heat because you're making more power

2) assuming all heat goes to the radiator, the only way your car will overheat is if the radiator cant get rid of the heat fast enough

getting a better radiator would be better than changing it to a non-OEM tstat. I bought a replacement and when compared with the OEM i was super dissapointed. The OEM is bigger and looks waay beefier.

The only reason why companies sell cold thermostats is because there's plenty of fools that are willing to buy them. They are bandaides at best. Do the "real fix", and get a better radiator.

You should also adjust the ratio of water / antifreeze to something more appropriate for your climate. If it doesn't ever freeze, then you can get better cooling by going to straight water (no antifreeze). You would also need to add something like Redline Water Wetter so that the water wouldn't be corrosive. A higher pressure radiator cap will help raise the boiling point.

Yes am running on OEM radiator.
I've just got Mishimoto Radiator & Mishimoto Shroud kit. Will put them this week.

I'm using InlinePRO stage 2 turbo kit which comes with 1000hp intercooler. I think the engine is getting overheated because of that huge intercooler blocking the air from the radiator.. ?

You have to hit 3 bars? At 2 bars my car will let Vtec work hum. "00 S2k

Yeah, the intercooler could be blocking the airflow but in the end, you need a good radiator, a lower T-stat will only slow down the overheating. If it still continues to overheat, look into a vented hood.

onesilver, Its actually at the very end of 2 bars that Vtec engages. At the beginning it doesnt, so I usually just ignore vtec until it hits 3 bars. Plus, it gives me a little more of a safety factor

Do you have a cooling plate, or anything to prevent air from just going over or around the radiator? Do you have hood vents, or anything that would reduce the amount of air flowing through the radiator?

Yes, my hood in vented. and i already bought mishimoto cooling plate as well..
the weather here is like hell.. Im thinking of something which sprays water or co2 to the intercooler while driving

The vents may be part of your overheating problem. What kind of vents do you have, and where are they? If they are just cutouts in the OEM hood, then I would consider covering them up to see if it helps.

Co2 will slow down an engine lol.. water meth combo would give you more power and reduce knock for more boost, it would heat your motor up more then!
