Default Question for the Suspension GURUs

I am riding on KSport coilovers. For background, I fell onto these coilovers for dirt dirt cheap and couldn't pass it up for the cost. Here's the dilemna, I've been riding with about 1000lbs of preload before Pawpaw504 and S2Qwik got to it and addressed the situation. With a 1inch gap between the bottom cradle and the spring, the bounce/rebound was completely unbearable (as witnessed by Nick aka BlkMugen). With 4 1/2turns of preload on the front and 2 1/2turns of preload in the rear, the car rides much better than the beginning and 1000x better than after the adjustment.

So now the issue at hand. I know replacement struts can be ordered from the manufacturer (sp?), the question I am posing tonight is: Can struts from another reputable suspension company (ala Tein, Megan, Buddy Club) be bought and fitted into my exisisting KSport Coilover "Kit".

I've looked all in the forums and found no such solution. AND!!! and, I refuse to call up KSport USA and ask if another company's struts be made to fit. Soooo, any information/help is much appreciated. Also, don't expect too many of these REAL posts that often.

PS diverging from topic is accepted and expected. but nonetheless keeping the course would much be appreciated

thanks
francis

your use of the word 'strut' confuses me. are you asking if your k sport springs from your coilovers will fit on another companies coilover/shock assembly?

well see, thats where the lingo gets really confusing.

as far as i'm concerned (and im no mechanic by any stretch of the imagination), the "shock assembly" can be replaced... just like if you blow out shocks in a coilover system (aftermarket ofcourse).

i guess to over simplify my question ... can "shocks from coilover set A" be replaced with shocks from another company that makes coilovers.

another way of asking is.....

I have Coilover Set A ...... and i THINK the shocks from Coilover Set A is busted.... i can order replacement shocks for Coilover Set A ... but instead, can replacement shocks from Tein/Megan/Buddy Club be bought and fitted as a replacement?

If your shocks are blown, you can try to contact K sport and get them rebuilt.

If you are looking to source from another brand, you would have to make sure the spring diameter of your ksports fits onto the assembly you want to use. I don't suggest going this route though, as the dampening from company to company is different, and the shocks are usually dampened according to the spring rate for that specific coilover.

firstly, i appreciate the quick replies

so far, ive already contacted ksport about getting them rebuilt and even ordering replacement shocks. its going to cost around 200-250 to get it done.

secondly, im aware of the matching of the diameter of the rods to the assembly. im not completely happy with the coilover kit, just cause it bounces all about on city roads but its smooth as silk on the highway.

another route i can take is to buy a higher spring rate, one that ksport offers (i bought the softer of the 2 that they offer). but since ive been running with such a huge preload, the shocks would be more likely busted.

i'll do more research into it and hope that someone has already done this. i'll be contacting tein tomorrow to see if they can help me with it.

i don't understand. are you shocks blown or not? If you think they are blown, why would getting higher spring rates be a fix?

if they are blown, then no springs... just replacement shocks

if they are not blown, i want a better ride... hoping that the higher spring rates would equate to what im looking for

some of the low end coilover doesnt off rebuild service, when you blew your damper what happen most of the time is the seal when bad, you don't actually change the damper housing but just the internal guts(sometime just as simple as seal, the fluid and the pressure)

not all internal guts are the same, piston design, shaft length, piston diameter, etc could be very different. in your case, it's very very not likely you can rebuild your damper with tein's stuff

the only thing could do is check out the id, length and od of the spring and see if it can be reuse for other coilover. but again, the springrate might be so different which also render it useless.

sorry sounds to me you should just sell it and get something else, sometime just because it's cheap doesnt mean you should jump ship

Edited because I just basically reiterated what you've said. Look into a new set of coils. Around the same price point you can get better options.
