Default Removing the CR's Shift Knob

I can't figure out how to take the shift knob off of my CR.

I previously had a 2005, for which the standard procedure (loosen locknut, then unscrew) got it off. But on my car now there doesn't seem to be a locknut. Does anybody know what's going on here? I can't imagine that it would have come from the factory loctite-ed, but I can't unscrew it at all either.

Let me know if pictures would help. I'm actually trying to change the radio, so if anyone knows how to do that without taking the centre console off, instruction there would fix my problem too.

(Should this be in the 'Under the hood' forum?)

there might be some sort of locktite on it. I would twist it really hard to see if it comes off. I have a 09 civic si and it did not have a locknut, it had some sort of adhesive in the threads

It unscrews for sure. They probably overtightened it. Also, there should be a locknut on there that is finished in powdercoat dark brown/black, yours is missing sounds like.

are your numbers on the shift knob lined up straight???? it doesnt sound like it could just be twisted on because the odds of a knob without a locking nut lining up straight are about as slim as me dating the home coming queen

Did you ever try taking the shift knob off of your si? If it's just adhered to the threads without a nut, I'm wondering how I'd put it back on if I took it off.

sillyboybmxer: The numbers look perfectly straight to me, and it doesn't rotate (with resistance) at all the way some other cars do.

Does anyone know if the knob could be counterbored?? I can't figure out how I wouldn't be able to see that, but that's the only way I can think of that a locknut could be hiding in there.

edit:

RFCR: Does yours look like the regular shifter 'assembly', except with the spherical shifter at the top?

You will have to turn the nut clockwise and not the other way around. I've replaced the stock knob on my girlfriend's S2000 this weekend.

Anyway, you don't have to remove the knob to replace the radio on your S2000. Just put your shifter in the reverse or second gear position, to get some room. Then, open the radio cover and pull it parallel to the console towards you; the lower part will be unclipped that way. Then by using a screwdriver covered in plastic tape, remove the upper part from above the air vents. Once you do that it will easily come off and you will see four screws holding the radio. Unscrew them and gently remove it. The wiring is long so be careful when pulling or when reinstalling in.

I hope that helps.

I was hoping it would be that easy, but I found some instructions indicating honda made the process a little more difficult for the ap2. =[

I took some pictures of it so maybe it's more clear I'm talking about. Do you see anything I don't?

Actually it looks like there might be some adhesive involved? I've a feeling changing the radio may be a lost cause...

wow looks like they used a jb weld or something on there.......you might just have to break the bond with forced and hope nothing happens if you can,...if all else fails just replace the shift lever itself. but like said before,...you dont need to take the knob off to change the radio

Looks like someone took off the nut to set the knob lower and used some adhesive to line it up.
