Smart key?
Is it possible to add a smart/proximity key so that the car detects the key fob and you can just have the push to start button without inserting the key? Kind of like newer cars how it unlocks once you touch the door handle and is ready to start with just a touch of a button. has anyone ever done this to an s2000?

I am pretty sure it can be done
They have one now that you can get a chip surgically implanted in your hand so that when you touch your cars window or where ever you decide to put the sensor it'll unlock your doors and start it up for ya ;D

In the good old days we would tape an extra key behind the dash to make autostarers work. This does of course disable the sercurity feature which I wouldn't recommend. With the S I think you would run into a "how do I unlock the steering issue" I thinks is mechanical. If it is an electric locking solenoid then maybe???

Lol, I wish I could replace the push to start/stop keyless ignition on my wimter car with a good old fashioned key.
You have no control over when the starter turns, when it stops. If there is a problem with starting the car, or if battery is dead, things go wonky. If you're working on the car, you can't crank it at will. If you are trying to check compression. If you stored it for winter and now you want to build oil pressure before it fires up in spring.
If your foot wasn't on the brake when you pressed it, it doesn't start, and instead goes into an 'accessory' mode which boots things up. But then you have to wait for that bootup process to complete before you can try starting again.
To use that proximity door open, you have to press the doorhandle button, then pause while things unlock, before you pull the handle. Get that wrong, and it gets into this half unlocked mode. Now you have to dig key out and lock it, then try unlocking again.
An old school key is simple. It works. Plus the action to stop the engine is not identical to how you start it. Its the opposite action. In a panic situation you mash the button to kill the engine. But did you just start it, or was it already stopped and now you just restarted it?
