Default soft top

hey guys, i was using our search engine when i found a guest named Puff who mentioned using shoe goo (what is used to patch skateboarding shoes from taring) as a preventative maintanence from the top not only taring but also stretching/wearing.....just need some insight if anyone has experience doing this. my top has to tares, MY00, but is starting to give signs that this could be a problem around the corner. thanks in advance guys, i cant PM him due to the full inbox

hey man thanks for the reply, any info on how you applied the shoe goo?
i used it for my shoes yeaaars ago, so i am familiar with the product, just wondering a few questions other than than info on the application...

1. how long ago did you use the shoe goo on the top, do you drop the top often or in excess of hot/cold weather?

2. did you use the clear shoe goo or the black shoe goo?

Haha I remember using that stuff on my shoes when I would go skate.

I found some clear fabric glue at my local walmart that I used on the inside of my top. I have a 1" tear on my passenger side, and I put a few stitches in it, and applied the glue on the inside and it hasnt leaked at all. It is also made to flex so no problems putting the top up or down.

i have the 2 'latch' tears on my top, MY07 and i used some kind of clear stuff to begin with but when the sun would hit it for a while it would get gooey again and drip off into my interior, it wasn't this same stuff but be careful with it either way, you don't wanna ruin your interior.

I bought some "Mega black O.E.M high temp silicone gasket maker" from my local O'reilly's and that stuff is the shiz, it is almost the perfect color black for my top and it can sit in the sun all day and never get soft, it is very cheap as well, i would recommend that versus anything clear as it will most likely turn white.

Well like i said, thankfully i do have experience with the product and i can say that it deffinately will not turn soft or drip once it dries.

but this other material you mentioned is worth looking into. because the shoe goo hardens and would stay that way

also, im not repairing a tare in the top, i just want to use some glue to prevent the stretch marks of stress and wear, so since this is the case, am i better off using the Mega black O.E.M high temp silicone gasket maker?

ill try looking up some info on it since i have not seen anything yet
thanks

sorry i misread your post, if its not ripped yet i would just put a patch on the inside, you could use the shoe stuff for that, it would make it thicker so maybe it wouldnt rip ever.

Clear shoe goo works well, it is super strong, way stronger than rtv. Use it from the inside and it will barely be visible.

The patch is not a real solution, the elastic straps that hold the bar are weak. I tip it briefly with my hand when folding until I can get the stealer to fix it.

im also starting to wonder how the black shoe goo would hold up..i dont mind the visibility aspect if it can save me the expense of another top..
