Default +1/-1 Wheels allowance in jeopardy!

I heard a rumor that the +1/-1 wheel allowance is in danger of being scrapped for "Street" class next year.

If you feel strongly about having that option, please write your letter here!

I think having tire choices is better until things shake out.

That is definitely not a good look for the AP1 crowd wanting to do RTR or Street. Did the proposal for using AP2 wheels get shot down? Would you rather have this proposal or put the AP1 in C class? I will write an email regardless, I also believe that an AP1 with Ap2 size wheels would even the playing field. Unless they are trying to grow C stock then I would see the point in declining the +/- proposal.

There was no mention of the proposal in last month's Fastrack, but that would only have covered letters written until early to mid-June or so. The next Fastrack is about three weeks out.

Note that the SEB is getting so many letters on the Street proposal that they're not summarizing the contents of each one as they usually do, so if your proposal is not recommended, you won't see any acknowledgement other than an email confirmation and the letter number being listed in the next month's Fastrack.

Having said that, you should all have reasonable expectations -- it's extremely unlikely that an allowance for swapping wheels between different model years, either specifically for the S2000 or generically for all cars, will get in this year. Allowing even that level of update / backdate would be a titanic shift away from Stock's traditional preparation philosophy. That's not a value judgement on the proposal, but rather a fact. The SEB and SAC would want to give people a lot of time to digest and comment on a major change like that, whereas they've clearly stated that we're nearing the end of the iterations on the Street rules with the v4 proposal, and there have been no new allowances proposed since v1 came out three months ago.

I don't have an S2000 any more but I see why an AP1 owner would prefer to go to a 17" wheel. That being said, I think if you zoom out and look beyond the AP1, you'll see that the concept of +/- 1" isn't in line with the philosophy behind the entire proposal of Street Classing. I think all the testing and tuning and wheel purchasing that would be exploited by the most fanatical would create a level of car prep and tuning that just isn't in the spirit of Street. Save that for Street Touring.

IMO

And shoot, the Elise is one of the cars that would benefit most from this concept!

noted! thank you for the clarification. Im just shooting blindly here but if I was an AP1 driver i would opt to go straight into STR if this wheel allowance gets scrapped. just my .02. Just from my reading they would be at a huge disadvantage against the AP2. i never personally driven an AP1 in stock form during autox so i guess im not qualified and only going by hearsay.

The flip side is that a lot of cars (F-Street, A-street, Super Street) with factory 19 or 20s have no options for tires without a +1/-1. It's not a matter of unlimited tuning. It's a matter of not having ANY street tire options unless Z2s and Rivals massively expand their size availability. The 20" rivals are super tall (28-29"!!) and there aren't any 19"s.

Z2s are not available in 20" and only have two choices (245 or 275) for 19"s.

So I agree it wasn't part of the "stock" philosophy, but this is "street" and there aren't a lot of big tire options.

So without the tire option, they kill a number of cars and classing becomes entirely dependent on what the tire company decides to produce that year.

Yeah, I get that. I don't get why all of Solo has to be punished with the burden of a few cars. I haven't researched it; what cars are awesome that use 20s? Yikes.

Corvettes, some Porsches and some Mustangs have standard 20s.

The new Corvette Stingray has 20" as the only rear option.

I keep reading this in a lot of places, but where would one find an off-the-shelf 17" x 6.5" in a 5x114.3 anyway?
Rears aren't a problem at 17" x 7.5" though.
