2015 S2K Challenge #1 Buttonwillow RESULTS!
Greeting All,
The first round of the 2015 S2K Challenge lived up to the hype. Many competitors posted new personal best laps. Buttonwillow weather was not cooperating as morning fog kept the track from going hot till almost noon. With fog cramping our style the sessions to count were 3rd and 4th. Seasoned Challenge veterans battled Challenge new comers in the dense morning fog while many personal bests were set in session 5 which didn’t count…
17 competitors gridded up Saturday between the 4 classes with the largest field being in Super Mod.
Sunday had a special carryover due to Saturday selling out. Both days will count towards the season totals as separate events. (If you ran both days Saturday’s points counted)
Saturday’s results:
Stock class only had 1 competitor (Because everybody has the Mod Bug!)
Earl Soon was able to set a 2:20.255 in Purple 4 to take the top spot. Congrats Earl!!!!!!
Street Class
In Street 5 competitors diced around in the morning fog. Bryan Kim took 5th with a 2:14.898 in Black 4. Brian was dealing with traffic and managed a semi clean lap to take the 5th spot. Christopher Gau was testing the limits of his new non staggered set up. Christopher set a 2:11.610 in Black 4 for fourth place. However Christopher later in Green 5 found a few more seconds and set a 2:08.42 which was a major improvement and new personal best! Third went to a returning regular Albert Castro. Albert returned from the dark side and pulled his wing. He set a 2:10.299 in Orange 4 which was good enough for the third spot. Second place went to Ryan Delrosso. Between prepping his Lemon’s car and lending Challengers fuel…Ryan went out in Green 4 and set almost two identical 2:07.4’s. Mr. Consistent. However Yuren Chu managed a 2:04.259 in Red 3 to take the top spot!!!! That’s a seriously fast time for street!!!
Congrats Street Class Drivers!
Mod Class
Modified had 4 competitors with a new personal best taking the top spot! Kyle Kurka in his beautiful CR grabbed 4th with a quick time of a 2:05.891. Marc Gabay ran a 2:04.059 in Red 4 for third. However he was another challenger to run his fastest time in Red 5. Marc’s 2:01.590 would have taken second if he could have laid it down a session earlier. Daniel Tsui’s 2:02.271 earned him second place in Mod. His best time of the day was also in Green 5 and was a 2:01.629. Better weather or not John Tran laid down his personal best time in Green 4. John is now a member of the :59 club!!! John’s 1:59.510 earned him the win!!!
Congrats Mod Class Drivers!!!!!!!
Super Mod
The largest field of the Challenge was at the sharper end of the stick. 7 competitors battled it out to set the fastest podium of challenge history. Who would have ever thought that a :57 wouldn’t’ get you on the podium???? Seventh place was Dave Lara (Lira?) Dave’s fastest lap came in Red 4. His 2:01.622 was only a few tenths away from 6th place. 6th Place went to Eugene Pasatpata. Eugene’s new custom splitter was only hours old. He quickly came to terms with his new front grip and set a 2:01.292 good enough for 6th place. 5th place was Dylan Huig. Dylan laid down a 1:59.632 in Red 4 on some old bald NT01’s. 4th place was NorCal Veteran Gary Yeung. Gary’s 1:57.734 was 2 tenth’s off the podium…So close. 3rd place went to Kai Moon. Kai’s 1:57.402 earned him a spot on the podium, however his session 5 time of a 1:55.725 would have won him the event if it was ran a session earlier. FAST!!! 2nd place went to Dustin Dessero. Dustin was in search of his first :55. Dustin missed it by 4 tenths… His 1:56.406 was good enough for the second spot. 2014 Super Mod Class Champion Chris Elders showed why he was the champ. His 1:56.141 took the top honors. So close to a :55, even though his in car timing read a :55…
Congrats Super Mod Drivers!!!!
Sunday’s Results
Sunday had fewer drivers than planned. That did not stop a new personal best from being attained in 2 classes. Morning Fog played out as well with the starting time being delayed a few hours.
Street class had 1 competitor. Steven Tobias ran a 2:11.124 for the Sunday Win! Congrats Steven!!!!!
Mod Class had the bulk of the participants. AJ Jaquias ran a 2:07.898 in Purple 4 for 3rd place. 2rd place Kevin Lui ran a 2:03.002 to take second place. Fabian Lacy showed up and ran his new personal best of a 1:57.740 in Red 3 for the top spot. Congrats Fabian on the new PB!!!
Super mod was only had 1 competitor who competed the day prior. However its worth the mention that Dylan Huig joined the :57 club on Sunday. His 1:57.652 would have squeezed him into 4th on Saturday. Still a great lap Dylan!!!!
As the first round is in the books we need to be thankful for a great series to showcase these amazing cars. Although fog was a damper it’s still better than our friends to the east who still have their cars on trailers or in garages. Thanks everyone for participating and please join us at Auto Club Speedway on February 22nd Sunday for Round 2.
