Default 2016 S2K Challenge Round 3 Buttonwillow

Greetings drivers.

Yes we are finally back at Buttonwillow!!!! Saturday April 9th!!!!!!!!!!

We typically start the season at BW but with the treat of El Nino and the past two years having rain we decided to skip the January event.

This could possibility be the last event before the summer heat slows the lap times. So if you are planning to go sub 2 for the first time this is your event!

Sign up quickly as it will sell out.

http://speedventures.com/events/eventdetail.aspx?id=570

There will also be the 86 Cup challenge as well. This is another great opportunity to show them how good our aging platforms perform!

We should have an announcement shortly about our title sponsor. For those of you who attended Chuckwalla you have a sneak peak of who it could be. I'll give a hint that they just dropped a new street tire this week....

Lastly a shout out to our current sponsor 949 Racing. 949racing.com More news on the prizes donated by Emilio as the season progresses. As always Emilio stocks brake pads and fluids. He is also an AIM distributor if you are in the market for Data Acquisition. Many of the Challenge drivers use the AIM and we are always willing to help with some data goodness.

See you in a short two weeks!

Write up!!!! Pics tonight

The 3rd round of the 2016 Maxxis S2K Challenge was an exciting day at the track.

With 25 competitors braving the “rain storm of the century”. If you were brave enough to trust it rarely rains in Buttonwillow in April you were rewarded with dry cool weather. As competitors arrived they were greeted with a wet drive to BW. Session one was a throw away as the track was still damp from overnight rains. Suddenly as session 2 was to begin the skies cleared and we had dry track the rest of the day. Times were quick and the penalty for an off were high. They typical BW mud had taken a few Honda’s by surprise. Some were lucky enough to take this special dirt all the way home with them! We even had one driver park his car near the fence waaaaay outside the exit of riverside.

For those of you at the awards ceremony there are a few changes to the days standings. We had 2 competitors whose times were recorded and competition forms filled out correctly, they just were not on our results sheets. *Reminder to all. After session 2 please check your name on the Challenge sheet for correct classing as well as your transponder times* **Reminder #2. If you want to compete in the challenge you need to rent a transponder**

So here is how it shook out!

Stock Class had 4 competitors. A few new faces braved the elements and were rewarded with a fun day at the track. In 4th place with a 2:41.971 was Reginald Guinto. This was Reginald’s first time at the track and it’s safe to say he is hooked. 3rd place went to Jeff Kuitert. Jeff set a 2:20.968 in Purple 2. 2nd place with a 2:17.946 was Eric Kwan. Eric’s fastest time was set in the Purple 3. 1st place went to Van Nguyen. Van set a 2:14.407 before some starter issues kept her off track.

Congrats to all the Stock Class Participants.

Street Class showed up in force. Some seriously fast street class times were set. 7th place went to David Singh. David set a 2:17.546 in Purple 3. 6th place was Danny Lu with a 2:15.282! 5th place was John Lee with a 2:08.674 and a super close call with the wall of Champions. It was about as close as you can get without trading paint. 4th place went to Fernando Muga. Fernando’s 2:08.610 was 6 thousandths better than John’s lap. 3rd place went to Marvin Lopez. Marvin is still sporting the Blackbird Fab rear spoiler and was able to clock a 2:03.552 in Orange 2. 2nd Place went to Jason Woan. Jason set a 2:02.806 in Green 3. Top honors went to Richard “I’ve got 45 lbs of mud under my car” Huang. Richard set a blistering time of a 2:01.724. It was so fast he fell asleep after it and missed the awards ceremony.

Congrats Street Class Participants.

Mod Class had 5 solid drivers with varying setups. Angela Konno seta a 2:07.298 in Green 3 for 5th place. 4th place went to Adrian Torres with a 2:07.192. Angela went faster by a tenth later in the day but alas sessions 2-3 only counted. 3rd place went to David Leung. David pulled our a 2:02.026 along with racer excuse #88 (My coilovers need a rebuild) 2nd place went to Norman Kung. Norman set a 2:01.143, just a few tenth off the class winner Ryan Delgrosso’s 2:00.847. Ryan’s 2 Flat is a new Personal Best and the quest for Sub 2 fame will have to wait for another day…

Congrats Mod Class Participants.

Super Mod had 8 competitors. 8th place went to Kevin Chen with a 2:12.869 in Purple 2. 7th place was Sung Shin with a 2:08.163. Sung set a 2:04 later in the day during open passing. Nice improvement…6th place was Christopher (I left my car parked outside of riverside and now I’m on Jalopnik) Wiita. Chris set a 2:02.402 in Orange 2 prior to his wheel exiting stage left. For those of you who didn’t see it his reaction is priceless. 5th place went to Danny Chun. Danny set a 2:01.436 in Red 3. Here is where the sub 2 begins. 4th place went to David Lara with a 1:58.848 in Red 3. Dave’s season nemesis Ted Park edged him out again with a 1:58.393. I believe that is 3 for ted and 0 for Dave…2nd place went to Dustin Dessero with a 1:57.630. All by himself was the selfie taking, beard wearing and fast driving Chris Elders. Chris set a 1:56.867 to take his second win in a row in Super Mod. Can anyone top him this year?

Lastly a big thank you to our sponsors: Maxxis Tire and 949 Racing. Please keep supporting those companies that support our sport.

Our next event will be at Streets Of Willow Saturday May 14th.

Super Mod
Halfway through reading this I just started hearing "The boys are back in town" in my head

Also IN, Mod class. Car is louder and leaner now with 100% less broken test pipe.

So ill be first here:

Everyone that opted not to come due to weather really missed out. We had a total of 22 competitors brave the drive in the wet. Session 1 was SLICK but then the clouds broke, and we got 3 sessions of sunshine with dry tarmac and cool air temps. Lots of personal bests were set as well (I know Ted and I both put up PB, im sure others did too).

I gambled that there would be a cloud break and towed up on Maxxis RC1's (which were not so hot in the wet session 1). Fortunately it paid off when the rain cleared. There was the looming threat of mud if you went off which meant some of us drove a bit more conservatively until the mud at key corners dried a bit (dont wanna put a wheel off into buttonwillow slurry at bus stop, the esses or phil hill).

Heres video of my fast lap from Session 3. I felt like I could have gone faster still but on Sunrise as the prototype passed me I fuel starved so had to end my session early.

anorexicpoodle: looks like my SRCs need to be rebuilt. I added more rebound and compression...no good...car is still bouncing like crazy. 60k miles + 4 years. Not bad!

Unfortunately, my GoPro turned off just before my complete drift through Sweeper at around 65mph with about 20 degrees of angle on RC1s. I also didn't get video footage of my drift over Phil Hill when the prototype cut through the apex. I almost ended up being like Yi-Chao.

I may reinstall my Mugen header (currently for sale). The response of that header is way better than OEM.

Are you going to change the valving?

Also your go-pro woes are why I am done with their product. Im tired of not catching something on film. Totally in love with the AIM smartycam!
