If you are not racing for points or money, then get the gears. So what if your laptimes are slower?
I guess that's a fair statement if laptimes aren't a priority but laptimes is the only thing that you can measure your progress against. Who would want to make them slower?

With the 4.77 gears what you will mostly be learning is how to feather the throttle when you are near redline in the corners and how to sit at redline in sixth while you are driving down the longer straights. Second gear is basically useless on most tracks, so you leave yourself with four useful gears and no top end.
On the other hand, with the 4.1 gearing I find that I never get into sixth on any tracks, so again I'm only using four gears. However, at least they aren't top-end limited.
I'm a little surprised about people saying they want to go back to 4.1 from 4.4.
As for the acceleration thing -- it's power that accelerates cars, not gearing. People like the "gears" on the street because they aren't driving around in the engine powerband, and the shorter gear ratio gets them into it quicker. But on the track you should be in the engine powerband almost all the time, and so the gear ratio isn't actually going to be helping you at all.

whoa. i didnt expect this type of answers. the total opposite of what i was hoping for( advantages both off and on the track). so i guess i have a delimna here. faster on the track or faster on the street ?
