A3S03 Hoosiers in the cold
I had an autox this past weekend with the temps in the 40s. The surface was asphalt and there was very little grip. Is there a temperature point where I'm better off with the S02s vs. Hoosiers? Looks like I'll have another cold one this weekend.
hmmm...both Hoosiers and Kumhos heat extremely quick so after a few runs, the track will be nice and warm and your tires would catch heat almost immediately....I doubt your stock tires will come close to compare with the grip of either tire Hs or Kh...that is...
Kumho's work *much* better than the Hoosiers in the cold... but it would have to be pretty cold for the S02's to be faster. Although, our first event in the car bone-stock on S02's was a 30 degree day and we set FTD and Indexed FTD!! So, I would say that 40 or below it might be worth trying the S02's, especially if it's asphalt. Concrete, the Hoosiers will build more temp. We recently ran an event in Knoxville with Mack, and it was a 35 degree day. On the asphalt surface the Hoosiers were horrible. Even with 2 drivers we couldn't build any heat. Mack (who was driving extremely well) beat my raw time on Kumhos. We probably both could have gone faster on S02's!
Personally I would say that less than 40 run Kumhos, less than 30 S02's. If Kumhos aren't an option then run the S02's less than 40 on ashpalt. Concrete run the stickies unless it's less than 30.
YMMV, of course!
