Default AP1/AP2 in STR - let's talk about ECU tuning

Firstly, hi! I've been lurking for a while but finally have decided to start posting. I currently autocross my Miata in c stock, and really want to change cars and classes. I'd like to get into an ST class, and I've always wanted an S2000 (my other car is an integra type R, so I know all about the joys of vtec). Sooo, I'm doing as much research into STR as possible, and am currently thinking an S2000 in that class would be perfect.

Secondly, it seems like I'm the first to ask a STR question outside of the STR thread - but man that thing is massive! I've tried to get through it all, and have mostly succeeded, but I think separate topics are starting to be in order.

OK so on to the question. It seems that there are different options that are allowed under the STR ruleset for ECU tuning for the 2000-2003 model year, the 2004-2005 model years, and 2006 and later. Can we go over what options exist for each? What kind of power curve (compared to other year S2000s) will you end up with after you're done doing whatever tuning is possible, and how do the ECU tuning costs compare between generations?

To better frame the background of the question, I would love to be able to get as old of an S2000 as possible since a 2006 and later would really stretch my budget hard, but I've heard that the earlier ones are much more limited in terms of tuning and whatnot.

Thanks for any input!

An early S2000 did very well at the recent Blytheville Tour. Its about putting the power to the ground and holding traction > getting the most power out of the car. The street tires are a big limitation and money is better spent on other mods. I feel the AP1s are just as capable as the 06 and newer.

I know its a lot of info, but check out the STR Prep thread. All this has been covered in there.

Yep, it's all in the end though, haha. I was on page 60 and confident that it hadn't been discussed, then lo and behold on page 80 reading way too late tonight it's there.

Thanks for the input.

That thread is a bit unruly. If only there was a way to break out each area of discussion in order to organize it.

Eh, I'm not sure I really know what I'm doing yet. It was ambitious to think I could learn how to drive a RWD car and set it up at the same time. I'm on a bit of a steep learning curve right now. Maybe next year.

Yeah, but that was the first car I ever drove. I switched to the CRX before I developed as a driver. That was an incredibly easy shift. Going back to the S2000 after 3 years of habitual CRX driving has been very challenging. Maybe I'm just a FWD guy and I don't know it yet.

Yeah, I actually started and RWD and feel way more at home in it than anything else. I am looking forward to next year....
