So my wheels are 18x9 fronts and 18x10 rears.

I basicly have 2 DOT options in the sizes I need (~245 front, ~285 rear). Hooisers and Kumho Esctas.

While I'd like the extra stick of the Hooisers I am leaning towards shaved Esctas as I can use them for "street" tires too the 1 day a month my car -might- see street driving.

Are they Esctas signficantly slower at auto-x? Should I just buy the hooisers?

Also Auto-X is 99% of the time on concrete.

Ry, I didn't run on full shaved Ecsta's, but they were heatcycled and driven on the track 1 day. Not that I can compare both, since I have never actually driven on Hoosiers, but rzrsedg's car felt WAY more glued to the ground. If you are going for a competitive time and not just a fun run, I would say Hoosiers.

Sorry, my bad. I would still say hoosiers. It would take effort to make you car street worthy.

my car is already "fair weather" streetable. I just opt not to drive it much as all the stickers and wing get more attention than I want.

Just get the Hoosiers. I haven't heard great things about the Ecstas in those sizes. For how often you'll street-drive your car, you could probably get away with not changing them. I know a few people who do it all the time.

Make sure to get A-compound as well. You won't be able to get enough heat into the R's.

Rylan,

I don't think the Ecstas work all that great when stuffed on a wheel that is too narrow, and need good negative camber (not sure what you are running). With your wheel sizes, you shouldn't have a problem with stuffing, but I'm not sure the 225F/285R combo would work well (depends on the rest of the setup whether it will push badly). The 265F/285R combo would be better and should fit fine on your wheels, but it might not clear in the front. Hoosier 245/285 would be faster autoxing and fit, but I wouldn't drive them on the street much.

So I'd think that....

-The Hoosiers will certainly be faster at autox. Not by a ton, but they should be consistently ahead esp. on concrete.
-The Ecstas will be a far better street tire.
-The better Ecsta setup (265F) might not fit, anyway.

Here I am! (Krazik asked that I reply to this)

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. McKee.

Andy (along with Derek) are the only autocrossers (that I know) that are SERIOUS enough to have done a tire test. Back to back at one test-n-tune event Andy and Derek tested each tire on the market to determine which tire was the fastest. They even ran the tire expected to be slowest last - to remove the "learning the course" variable. The test was a while ago - but I believe the results were: 1) Hoosier A compound, 2) G-Force, 3) Kumho Victo V700. I think it was on concrete. I only really remember that the Hoosier won...

(Did you see the thread dedicated to me Mr. Andy? Did ya? I always look fast when you don't show up.)

Ry you may know this already but Hoosiers run wider than their advertised number width (i.e 265 may be closer to 275 or so). I believe they have the actual widths listed online, so make sure you check before you buy.
