Autocross - Mods
Hey everyone,
This is a questions mostly directed at the autocross guys out there but if anybody wants to chime in please do so. I started autocrossing at the end of last season when I got my S2000. I want to compete in stock class under SCCA regulations in the upcoming season. I'm still going to be running street tires for another season before I switch to R-comps (Thinking about potenza RE01R's). But the rest of my car is completely stock and there are a few things I can do to help me be more competitive and I'd like everyones input.
While staying in stock class I can put on a front sway bar, aftermarket shocks (but just shocks), aftermarket exhaust, aftermarket wheels (as long as they are the same as the AP1 stock wheels - Front 16x6.5 Rear 16x7.5 offset is 55mm 65mm) and a role bar for safety. I'm definately not going to do the rolebar cause I"m too tall to fit with it and not get aftermarket seats which would kick me into another class. I think I can also use any brake pads or air filter on the market.
Anyway, what have you autocross drivers (or people just into modding their car) had good experience with in the past? Thanks for your help!

What mods to get is really dependent on how much money you want to spend and how seriously you want to be competitive.
(1) I just want to have fun locally
(2) I want to make it to Nationals
Swaybar: (1) Saner, Cusco, or Swift bar is fine; non adjustable and $200-$300. (2) Gendron bar; very adjustable, stiffest bar available and $600. Comptech Adjustable is also pretty good but is more expensive and not as stiff.
Shocks: (1) Stock; free. Koni single adjustable with autox valving (that last part is critical otherwise the compression is too soft for the s2k); about $700. (2) Moton or Penske double adjustable; $4000-6000 (yes, that is thousand).
Exhaust: lightest single that your ears or pocketbook can tollerate. J's 70mm RS is not loud and around 10lb; $1500. Amuse Single Extra Titan also quiet and around 8-10lb (make sure it is the EXTRA or it is loud); $2200. Or look at the 63mm or 70mm from T1R...they are loud and 20lb, but less expensive; $700-1000 (and they are not so loud as to be untollerable).
Wheels: (1) stock; $200-300 for extra set. (2) JDM BBS s2k wheels; rarely seen on used market so expect to pay $1500-2000. There are no other aftermarket wheels that are SCCA legal for an ap1.
Pads: (1) OEM AP2 pads offer a bit more inital bite but are no better in fade...but that is usually not a problem in autox. (2) Hawk HPS, CarboTech AX6, BHP...for all watch for a good bit of dusting and possible higher rotor wear.
Filter: (1) stock. (2) K&N drop in, AEM dry filter, JR if you can find one. This really wont add much on our car and would be the last place I spend money for stock class.

I agree with negcamber. The first thing I would do is make sure I have some good rubber on. Next would be a front sway bar, a light exhaust (mainly for weight savings and you can get a 70mm custom fab'd for much less than JDM ones), and a K&N filter.
Oh and don't forget about a proper alignment. Enjoy

I agree with everything negcamber said. I autocross (obviously not stock class though), and I don't have the "basics" that I should...R-comps and a sway bar. I'm cannon fodder for any s2k's out there that have those 2 upgrades, and I've easily got 40 hp on them in the midrange, where you spend 75% of an autocross lap.
If I were truly serious about it, my setup would be different...but I'm not. I just like to have fun with the car, and autocrossing is where it's at for me

Thanks for all of your help guys. My buddy and I are going to be prepping our cars for autocross season soon so I guess I have to decide how seriously I want to compete. I'm definitely going to get some good rubber and a sway bar. I would like to do the shocks as well but where can you get Koni single adjustable shocks with autocross valving?
