Send oil sample to Blackstone. For $20-25 you might get a lot of answers

oil pressure dropping when hot due to bearing dying and the lack of power being dropping vtec when oil pressure dropped?
i'd be surprised if his oil was that hot with an oil cooler installed
I'm not saying he cooked the oil I'm just saying it might explain why it didn't happen right out of the gate on track. Took getting the oil up to 240-250f to get it thin enough where it dropped pressure from a bearing being worn out. If it dropped pressure enough it would loose Vtec. Perhaps it was right on the cusp of Vtec to no vtec oil pressure and would go in and out. And then BANG. ie perhaps the problem was created weeks-months ago but finally showed it's head that day.

On a side note, the last 2 times mine (k24) was at the track it did much the same thing. I assumed the loss of power to be no vtec due to water temps dropping to cold. Car was constantly trying to drop into the 150's on track for water temp and would loose Vtec. Oil pressure seemed good. On the session the motor died I noted Oil pressure in the 40's in Vtec. Moments later.... bang.

Do you have gauges for oil temp/oil pressure? I think it's clearly worth keeping an eye on so you can monitor pressure over time to make sure it isn't dropping/too low. What is considered a "dangerous" oil pressure in vtec, low 50's?

Also do you have more details of your setup? What kind of oil are you running, is this on 245 hoosiers?

No gauges. Tires are 255 Square NT01. Car is fully caged and has KW V3.

I bought this car with a blown motor and put in a used F22. The F22 had 220psi compression across the board and was turbo for a period of time. I ran it bone stock with just intake and an exhaust.

I'm leaning towards thing that the motor may have been bad to begin with was losing oil pressure causing VTEC to cut in and out. I have a new motor already and will report back when I take the old one apart.

This... although it's $28/test, plus the shipping.

I'd imagine fuel tuning issues would cause internal issues (ie. holes in pistons, bent rods, etc).
While I'd imagine oil issues would likely cause external issues (ie. rod spin and shooting it out the side of the block).

Were you stock internals? I'd imagine you had the RSX oil pump and a baffled pan, right? I have a turboed K24A2 in my car, so I'm curious...
