Is the Boxster really an underdog in AS?

As for our divisional, there was a white S2000 there from Nebraska driven by Matt McCabe. He was 16th at last year's nationals with a stock bar. The kid's good. Very good. He beat me by .312 over 2 days. I had a .2 lead going into day 2, and he beat me by a full .5 seconds on Sunday.
Here are the results:

Not only is he a good driver, he's got an interesting setup. He's got a 1 3/8" solid custom bent front bar. They took it to the aligment shop and told they guy to give them -1.8 camber front and rear and 0 toe front and rear. Well, let's just say the alignment guy messed up. Without divulging their exact setup, there is actually toe-out in the rear. I guess this compensates for the push created by the big front bar.

I would have never guessed this setup in a million years... and it just proves that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Also of note is that Chris Dvorak did quite well in our own Windscreen's car. I know that if GH had been there the Boxster would have been right in the mix.

It's unfortunate, but I think the Boxster is getting it's own class because of the 1-2 times earlier this season that an S2000 whomped a Boxster. Since then, it seems that the Boxster and S2000 have had some great neck-neck battles (GH and I within tenths whenever we meet on concrete) and the Boxster has triumphed more than once. Next year the Boxster goes from slight underdog to BIG overdog.

Oh well, that's the way the cookie crumbles... I keep telling myself the S2000 will still be competitive, but can't help thinking about Matt Braun bringing his C4 Vette out of retirement. He will be tough. Very tough.

Time will tell.... but I wouldn't be surprised to see Andy or GH on top in Topeka. Then how will the SEB feel about their decision?

[Inexperienced Auto-X'er]I'm sort of glad to see that others still think the Boxster is still competetive. Because at every NNJR auto-x I've competed in this season ( 9 so far ), Pat Salerno has whomped my times. Thankfully he runs in a PAX'ed "Pro" class here in NJ, but I'm actually 3rd in AS here for the season and I still have yet to have a raw time that is within 2 seconds of Pat. So I'm real interested to see how Pat will do @ nationals, he was 5th last year in AS in his boxster.

And here I though nobody noticed our Divisional.:-) Sportscar sure didn't.

Jason, if it makes you feel any better I've already sent a letter to the SEB with my rec's for SS/AS/BS next year. I put it as follows...

SS - Z06, Viper, 911TT
AS - C5,C4,RX7TT,E46 M3, 300+hp M Coupe/Roadster, Boxster S
BS - S2000, Boxster, 968, E36 M3, 240hp Mcoupe/Roadster, MR2T

That's just listing cars I think will be actual players in the respective classes. I thought that this mix offered better competition and class growth than what is currently on the table. Feedback on my proposal has been so-so, and I'd put it as a long shot (extremely long) as ever happening.

I still believe the S2K will be the net winner over the Boxster (non S), and I will have all next year to test that opinion with both cars in the household. What class we run either one in National events is yet to be determined.

Those are the exact same lists I sent! That only proves that (besides the fact that great minds think alike) your listing makes sense when you consider the vehicles and the results. But the problem is that it's all water under the bridge... the last SportsCar (besides the glaring omission of your name in the AS picks) in the FasTrack section declared that the SEB had forwarded the Stock class re-alignment to the BoD for their approval. If I understand the club structure correctly, that means it's a done deal (with their one notable exception of the Boxster S being classed after Nationals.)

Anyhow, next year will still prove to be very fun, no matter where the cars end up. The good drivers will all end up in good cars and we'll all have a blast! I don't think many C4 vettes will come out of the woodwork, but we'll see.

Thanks for posting your lists, Andy.... and most of all: Nice driving at the Divisional! Congrats.

Jason Saini, I'm curious to know what G.H. had to say after you guys did this little camparo thingie with the Boxster and the S2k. Was he mum about it, or did he at least acknowledge that perhaps the two cars do belong together indeed? And why is he considering running GS instead of AS? Does he not want to 'accidentally' do well in AS in the 'underdog' Boxster?
While I'm just an 'ordinary' Miata pilot, some day I hope to be an S2000 pilot. I had first dibs to buy Gary Thomason's S2000 as I bought his previous car- the 99 Miata, but since I decided to go back to school, I had to pass, much to my chagrin. Lucky for Joe Goeke that I decided to pass otherwise I'd be the owner. And when it does happen, I would like not like to compete against guys like Matthew Braun in a C4 or Rob Falkner in a Boxster S. While I think the S2000 can still run against these cars, much of it depends on the course.
My friend Jason Keeney is nice enough to let me autocross his S2000 every so often and I'm thankful for it cause everytime I finish a lap in it, I'm the happiest man in the world. And, as Gary Thomason put it best: " The car is such a beast! It's so awesome cause you know that despite it got the best of you, your time was still excellent and you get the feeling you can always always do better."
Honestly, before I saw you drive in Wendover, I was thinking you'd get a beating by all the West coast AS pilots but after what I saw in Utah, I thought, 'damn, this guy is pretty good!' Sometimes I still wish Thomason was still driving his S2000, killing everyone, but times are good for a change. I still think Andy McKee in the Boxster is going to be lethal and in my honest opinion, the guy to beat in AS in Topeka, given a course that relies more on technical turns and precision, etc, than on brute speed and blind panache. I don't really listen to NAP or Sports Car, just mostly, what I think. I saw your previous attempt in GS in the 2000 Nationals, but I guess the S2000 has really sharpened and honed your skills in 2001. Good luck in Kansas next month!

One car keeps getting barely mentioned - the 968. It's only the car that won the 2 previous National Championships before the S2000 came around (over various Boxsters). I think we'll see the Kozlak's come out again with theirs and win when the S2000 is gone. I think the Boxster is still at a disadvantage even w/o the S2000.
