Default Brake Assist

Hey guys,

Has anyone had experience driving a car with Brake Assist?

From what I can understand, it holds brake pressure momentarily even after you release? This sounds dangerous.

Can it be defeated?

I searched the forums but didn't come up with any first hand experiences.

Thanks.
jeff.

I know that people have been worried about it ever since it started showing up on new cars. I haven't heard of many cases where it has actually been a problem.

I did hear one time from another instructor that it was just impossible to be really smooth coming off the brakes on one student's car. That was a BMW with brake assist.

I would guess trailbraking is most affected.

It must be confusing as hell to drive a car like this on the track.

I didn't notice anything unusual going on with the brakes of the MY06 S2000 I drove for a lap on the autocross course.

I don't think the 06 S2000s have brake assist, do they?

Mine doesn't and trailbraking works just fine.

Anyone else have any input? Is it hard to be smooth coming off the brakes, and can it be defeated?

From what I understand,
MY04 added ABS brake distribution, which is simply a split mu braking system, this is a fine IMO
MY06 added Stability control, which uses brakes and throttle to adjust the attitute of the car, this can be defeated if desired.
My06 also apparently added this brake assist feature, which sounds really odd to me, what purpose does it serve?

I've had my '06 to a couple of weekends worth of HPDE's this year and if brake assist is actually a feature, which I doubt, it is completely transparent. I've never noticed anything artificial in the modulation or release of the brakes, either at threshold levels or trailbraking.

I run Superblue and change the pads to Carbotech XP10/8's for the trackdays. Otherwise, it's bone stock. Don't get tricked into believing what some are selling here that the car has evolved into a GT cruiser, it's plenty capable and just as fast as it ever was.

From Honda...

Brake Assist helps drivers apply full braking pressure in an accident avoidance situation. In an emergency braking situation when the brakes are suddenly applied, brake assist helps the driver apply full braking force via the ABS actuator. A pressure sensor detects an increase in brake fluid pressure and activates the ABS system. Braking pressure is maintained momentarily after the driver's initial braking action to help the driver stop promptly.

Importantly, Brake Assist assists the driver in obtaining full braking performance in an emergency. The Brake Assist system deactivates when the driver releases pressure on the brake pedal.
Brake Assist does NOT hold the brakes when you ease off, it just holds the pressure!

It is an enhancement that applies braking pressure to the threshold much quicker than traditional brakes. It doesn't change the modulation when letting off the brakes.

I have driven it at the track quite allot and it is just as manageable as the brakes on my old 2002.
