Default Cage

On the approach to putting a cage into an AP1. Been lurkin and reading a bunch as I am new to S2000s - long time Audi guy.

I really like what Rob Robinette did and have sent his page over to my fab guy.

My question is - If you could do it all again, what would you do differently or what would you throw out to me as 'important to think about' on my approach?

I am thinking full cage with rigidity and safety as the two keys. This is for a fun track toy that I'm building - with an emphasis on not-flashy, all function. My decisions will tend towards the less expensive right answer so I can be free mentally in the car to get on it. I have a late model Audi build - it nags me sometimes on track as I do not want to wad it. I want to be free of those thoughts and am making decisions to get me to that place with this build.

I would look at the most stringent requirements of the race series you think you'll wind up in and make sure you hit those highlights in terms of steel thickness and required elements. I know SCCA / NASA / PCA have some differences in terms of horizontal dash bar element.

Good stuff, thanks for the input. I agree and have been scoping based on NASA, but I will cross reference.

I wanted a smaller "footing box" that didn't extend into the cockpit but this is what Piper built. My left ankle rests against it when my foot is on the dead pedal.

I really like what krazik's are mounted in that new build.

Thanks Rob - I'll be sure to share what we come up with. I'm a month to a month and a half away from the actual fabrication; couple of cars ahead of me in line.

You should take a look at the cage that "Driving Ambition" (Shad) made for Krazik's car. That's best s2k cage thread /build that I've seen. You can gut out your a-pillars and build the cage into them to reduce weight and make more room.

Nice, thanks for the lead. I have def. checked out that build, sick. I'm not going that deep, but the cage is totally sweet.

You want to consider tying the footwell intrusion bars to the frame rail, which is between the clutch and brake pedal. This is about 6" to the right of where Rob's is.

Also, if you use a OEM hardtop, cut into the top's internal structure to get the bar tucked up inside the top and away from your head.

Not saying my cage is perfect, but I am extremely happy with it.

Lots of pics here:

Racelabz.com in PA put it in.

The only thing that I may have done different is put the harness bar closer to the seat, but the current configuration provides more room for adjustment and different seats.
