noob question... how does SA ratings compare to M ratings? I got a Snell M2005 brand new for 75 shipped for autocross. no complaints with it.

If I remember correctly, M ratings are for motorcycles and dont have fire protection built in. It will work for autocross but some tracks may not approve them. SA rating has built in fireproofing which should be universally accepted as long as the rating is withing the last 3 versions.

Only way you will find a S2005 full face helmet for less than $100 is if you buy it used. G-Force makes an open face SA2005 helmet for about $150.

I would go with a 2005 whether it's M or SA, the 2000 rating helmets are only good till 2010 IIRC. If you just do autocross M rating should be ok but if you do any track/HPDE I'd suggest getting SA. As far as sub $100, I don't think you'll find it.

Besides, do you really want a $100 dollar helmet protecting your brain if something does happen?

This is the key question. If someone thinks that the activity you're engaged in requires a helmet, why would you want a crappy helmet protecting your brain?

best investment is a good helmet...really is that extra $50-300 worth it in this case? yes.

You dont have to break the bank, i have a great closed face helmet that was around $300. $200-250 should be enough though.
