Custom cages
I'll be participating in next year's 24hours of Le Mons, and we're starting to get our car together. We're doing this long distance with two of my friends mainly putting together a car, but they have no idea where to get a custom cage fabbed for the car. They are up in the southern WY/ Northern CO region. Any recommended shops up in that area?
Thanks!
Thanks!
S&W Race cars in PA makes pre-bent cages for a lot of Lemon-esq cars. You would need an experienced welder/fabricator to install it. We bought one for our Lemon and had a buddy put it together. He did it in a weekend. It was a good price but they were very slow to ship. You need to order early and stay on top of them. Ours came in 10 days before our event and it became a very nail biting experience.

The bars still have to be cut and fish-mouthed to fit. One thing I didn't like was that the halo was a hoop, rather than two continuous bars from the main hoop to the floor as it ran across the top of the door and down the a-pillar. It probably made it easier to fab, and I'm not sure it was much weaker than a proper road race style cage.

Its a $500 limit, but does not apply to safety upgrades and whate else? I forget... My cousin had a team do it this year and they said it was a blast but a lot of work!
My only advice, via my cousin, make sure everyone is on the same page! As far as direction of the project, costs, repairs, etc...

Full cage with dual NASCAR door bars, window nets came to about $1k.
$1000 only buys 13 hours of labor at $75/hour, and that's not counting raw materials...
Hankville hotrod in the Denver area was doing the cage judging atthe lemons event in Colorado this year, I know they also build custom cages not sure on the cost
My team bought a weld in cage from Kirk racing ($700) and spent a few weekend welding and cutting on tin our driveway

Thanks for the tips guys. I figured there would be some other lemons guys on here.
So far we are all on the same page for costs and planning. We are attempting to make the October Chicago race, so we'll have to see what we can do in the (relatively short) timeframe that we have.
mrcbr600- $500 is the limit for the purchase of the car and any upgrades/repairs you need to do on the car. Budget is as much as you want for safety equipment.

Costs will vary by location, but where I'm at (Pacific Northwest), a good custom cage will run $2k+, and I've been blasted on other forums by people saying that it's impossible to get a cage even that cheap where they live.

It originally looked like this:

But the harness bars were WAY too low and we wanted a single piece diagonal supporting the rear hoop so we turned it into this:
