Custom RaceRender Tach Overlay

Being the nerd that I am, I've had fun messing around with RaceRender's custom object creator. Specifically I've wanted to create a realistic Tach for our cars. After several iterations I think I finally have one that I'm happy with. Please feel free to make changes or to let me know if you're having issues. For the AP1 guys, if somebody could take a high resolution (very clear) picture of the tach when it's lit up fully (just after turning the key) I could spend some time and create one for you guys too. Hope you guys enjoy it. Software - Harry’s LapTimer - Race Render 3 Hardware - GoPro - iPhone compatible with harry’s - Dual Electronics XGPS 150A - GoPoint OBD-II Bluetooth Sensor On Track 1. Start obd-ii and external gps 2. Start harry’s laptimer 3. Start GoPro At Home 1. Export an entire session from Harry’s laptimer a. Open lap list and select a lap from a given session 2. Download the following RaceRender3 Template (can be used with both free and premium versions)b. Scroll down and hit export. c. Add Video and Data files as appropriate. 5. Configure Coolant Temps a. Double click your data input file 6. Configure the Speedometerb. Under “Calculated Field 1” give it the name CoolantF c. Select COOLANT_CELSUIS from the first dropdown d. Select C -> F from the second dropdown e. Select OK f. Double Click “CoolantText” g. Under input select your data input file h. Under field select CoolantF a. Double click the SpeedText 7. Configure the Tachometerb. Under input select your data file c. Under field I select ‘SPEED_MPH’ a. Double click TachBar 8. Align Video and Data Fileb. Under input select your data file c. Under field select (RPM) a. Single click your data file and select ‘Synchronization Tool’ 9. Add or subtract the other graphics and export the videob. You will likely need to modify ‘offset within project’ by hand because data recording typically starts after your video has started c. To get it roughly correct I usually play the video until I’m at the first major turn of the track and pause d. I now modify the offset within project until the track map shows me at exactly that location on the first lap. e. Now to get the data exact I play the video until I am at the top of a shift (e.g. top of 2nd about to shift to 3rd) and hit pause f. Modify the offset by smaller and smaller amounts until the RPM’s match the very top of the tach. |
Very nice! I hope more people start to put up data on their hot laps. It really helps to see other's data when comparing laps looking for improvements.

How does the GoPoint work as far as data recording goes? Does Harry's lap time receive this as an input and spit out a "video data file" embedding the GPS and OBDII parameters?

Yep GoPoint just sends to data via Bluetooth to whomever will receive it...no recording of it's own.
Harry's can output the data in several ways, but I usually choose csv (comma seperated values). The file is basically a big table of values that has a row for each 1/10th of a second (or more frequent depending on the frequency of your gps/gopoint) and that row will include things like gps location, speed, lap number, lap time. If you also have a bluetooth obd-ii sensor then the row will also include rpm, obdii speed, temperature sensors, accelerator position, etc. Harry's website has a great overview of device compatibility and some of the pros/cons of different devices. http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html I've been pretty happy with Harrys, but a friend who is also using the overlay is running one of the Android alternatives and seems to have much faster refresh rate on his speed/rpm than I do. I use Racechrono on my android phone. I tried Harry's lap timer last year and didn't like how it didn't store a session, just a ton of laps in a long list. Racechrono stores each session, and breaks down your laps within that session (a lot easier to sort through than 50+ laps from a weekend in a long list). Maybe HLT has changed since last year..? I used an external qstarz 818xt gps at 5hz w/ an obdlink obd2 bluetooth reader. I copied skatebrian's overlay with the throttle..

Yes, it seems that RaceChrono has a much quicker refresh rate than Harry's. In fact, I just read that Harry's is limited by the GPS refresh rate which on my car is 5hz. I also realized that missed one piece of my setup, the font for the speed and temp. Font's can be tricky so I might do a longer write up at some point, but for now, I use the following free font for both: http://www.dafont.com/digital-7.font |
