Default Deticated Track Car Build Questions

Well, I have found a rolling S2000 with a salvage title that we are considering building into a dedicated track car. It primary uses will be weekend fun so we can really do whatever we want to the car, but trying to think ahead, we want to built it to meet a "Spec". So if we ever want to we can race in that class, or sell the car.

So my questions to you is:
  1. What race classes are out there for our car?
  2. Who's spec should we build it to?

Our curent plans would be to install a full cage, race seats and harnesses. The power plant and drive line would be stock (no F/I) and a fuel cell. So mainly a stock car with mainly safety related changes. The rest is open.

Any input you guys have would be great.

At this point there's not much Spec for the Honda. Rule of thumb is that not modding the car will never bump you out of a class. But I don't know how much fun it'd be to run a bone stock S2000 w/a cage.

And keep in mind that there's always going to be an open class that will allow just about anything (ITE, for instance).

We the primary goal is to have a stripped car with added safety. Based on the SCCA rule book, just gutting the car, adding a cage and fuel cell put the car in the "PREPARED CATEGORY".

You really have to take a look at what's available in your region with either SCCA or NASA.

Here's a link to your local SCCA region: http://www.sowdivscca.org/ You should be able to find local contacts there to ask questions.

Honda Cup is an SCCA regional class that's only running in California for now. You can see the rules here: http://honda-cup.com/ and click on competitors to see what is different or added to the standard SCCA GCR (general competition rules). Grab a copy of the GCR here if you want to see what's allowed and not, and to see specifics on cages, harnesses, fire protection, etc. http://scca.com/_FileLibrary/File/GCR2006.pdf

That should give you enough to thoroughly confuse you.

Learn from others (my) mistakes -

Put the cage up on the shelf in the back and save some room for seats and less weight of the cage

Decide now if you want to be able to put a passenger side seat in (you probably do). My cage prohibited it, so build yours which ever way....

Nascar bars into the drivers door seem like the safer approach vs. an "X" or the double tubes that don't go into the door. You have to gut the door, but safety is better than having a window (and the window is just added weight anyway).

Plan on getting a baffled oil pan or accupump (or something) if you are going to run hard.... unless whatever series prohibits it.

Thanks Scot

I would almost like to see a thred of What not to do, or what I did wrong building my car. Should that be a new thread, or just part of this one?

Jeff, we're trying to get a Spec S2000 racing series started, but we're at least two years away. We will have a "Spec" time trial series starting in '07, but a cage won't be required for that. A cage will also necessitate a hardtop.

The best mod you can start on is stripping. The more weight you can remove, the faster you'll go. The difference between a 2800 lb S2k and a 2400 lb S2k is tremendous.

The other things you'll NEED are coilovers and a wing. Gears, EMS, Accusump or baffled oil pan, these are all things you can add later if you want. You'll only really need the oil pan/Accusump if you take it to tracks with long high speed sweepers. It takes a pretty sustained high-G turn to cause oil starvation. (The only place we run into much trouble is the big banked oval at Cal Speedway.)

A cage is a great idea in that it allows you to safely push your car to the edge. It's so much more pleasant when the liklihood of dying is diminished that much.

Once you've stripped it, added race pads, wing, coilovers, and gone with lots more tire, you may be quite happy and not want any more mods for a while.

EMS? Why to you say that?

So far I have the following:

Rolling Shell, Already stipped.
HT
Gear, Not a problem.
JRZ Coilovers (Single Adjustable)
Two sets OEM Rims
Race Pads (We are a CarboTech Dealer)

We will be building the motor and there is a number of items I will need to get it running.

I need
Seats
Harnesses (4-5 point)
Roll bar/Cage
Baffed Oil pan.

Any plans on this being run outside California? I'm not ready for wheel-to-wheel, but would love to engage in some TT competition against other S2000s.

GPS data logger so you can work on the loose nut behind the wheel.

And don't mess with 4 point belts, go straight to 5 pt. Schroths of course. HANS too.

For the cage, you can go into the doors with NASCAR bars and still keep the glass for storage and open trailering --> just add a bracket under the window to hold the glass. Make sure to follow the correct size tubing. If I had it to do over again, it would be NASCAR bars on both sides. If this ends up being a track only car, do a right side window net.
