Front Upper Control Arm Mount Reinforcement

Default Front Upper Control Arm Mount Reinforcement

What are the options for reinforcing the front upper control arm chassis mounting points on an ap1?

Anyone use this: http://www.junauto.co.jp/products/reinforc...e/index.html?en

A bolt in solution is very appealing.

Anyone have pics that show how this area differs on the ap2?

Spoon offers this gusset plate. I'll likely go this route should mine ever tear. BTW, this is Stock legal in SCCA Solo2 should it matter, afaik.

Spoon piece is not legal for SCCA stock class. It would put you in FP IIRC.

You need to follow the procedure in the TSB.

Tech Line Summary Article

Pop noise at front upper control arm mount
Applies To: 2000-2004 S2000

If an oil canning or popping noise is heard when cornering or braking hard, visually inspect the frame rail where the front upper control arm-mounting bracket is spot welded to the frame rail. This problem only occurs to vehicles that have been driven repeatedly on a racetrack or in autocross events. If there is a gap
between the mounting bracket and the frame rail, use the following repair procedure:

� Bend the frame rail in towards the center of the car by placing a block of wood on the bracket spot welds and hitting the block with a large hammer.
� Remove the paint from the bracket and the adjoining frame rail.
� MIG weld the mounting bracket flange to the frame rail
� Refinish the paint to prevent corrosion.

I wonder if the JUN bolt in bracket would prevent failure and/or the need to have to factory bracket welded.

MIG welding is easy and way cheaper than the Spooners and I can think of how it would be noticeably inferior.

I'm not denying they are beefier, just that it seems like excess w/o #s to back it up vs a TSB'd setup.
A moot point for most of us bound by rules.

That piece definitely reinforces the mounts, but not in the direction that the failure occurs. It'll help to keep them from getting pulled apart or pushed together. But the failure is when the rear mount it pulled outwards, popping the spot welds off the frame rail.

Stitch welding the control arm is proven to work, the Spoon piece is overkill. Your choice if you want to do 'good enough for a race car on slicks' or 'will last at F1 braking levels'.

The Spoon one will definitely get you more points when listed as a mod for car shows. That's it's best use and main purpose. Paint it a contrasting color to help the judges find it.
