Default Half or full roll cage for HPDEs only?

Hi,

I only run HPDEs, and currently have a Harddog rollbar with bolted in cross and harness bars. I was going to upgrade to another Harddog with welded bars, with the harness bar placed lowered for proper harness height, but as it turns out a custom welded half cage would not much more in cost. But I figure, if going the welded cage route, I suppose I could also consider going for a full cage.

I primarily use the car for track, and only HPDEs. I will not be doing w2w with this car. Was wondering if you guys think a full cage is over-kill? After all, Honda claims the windshield pillars are strong enough to withstand a roll. I'd like to avoid the weight penalties of a full cage as well.

I realize that a full cage would strengthen the chassis, but I would figure the effect would be minimal. And since I am not going to do w2w, side impact protection is not very important. So, it would really just be for additional roll protection.

What do you guys think? Thanks for the advice in advance.

If you drive your car at all on the street, I wouldn't do a full cage. If you trailer, then go for it.

Why not W2W? I recently started and it's a whole lot more fun than HPDE. Do the full cage and go racin!

I never heard of a proper cage costing less than $2.5 - 3K but maybe you have a connection and if not, I'd be extra careful about the quality of the fabrication. In any case, I think you need to think about what you want to do with the car. Obviously going full cage is crossing the Rubicon when it comes to modding your car and it's only necessary if you have aspirations of going W2W. Also, are you using a HANS? If not, you might just be able to salvage the bar you have and save yourself a few bucks while you're at it since the angle of the removeable harness bar is only an issue if you're using a HANS device.

Have you looked at simply having a lower harness bar welded in place? You can leave the higher bar there for added protection.

A full cage requires major surgery to your car and getting in-and-out will never be the same. You don't want a full cage unless you really want to race wheel-2-wheel.

i'd love to, but i don't think i can afford all the associated costs--damage repairs, trailer, truck for trailer, time, etc... maybe someday.

thinking about it--that's one reason.

well, it appears that's kinda the consensus huh? guess the front cage section is really only beneficial for w2w from the comments given.
