I'm not on the Bimmer list, but this was forwarded to another list I am on. Thought I would share.

Just my opinion on this. SCCA mandated the HANS in 2000. I thought "That sucks, its going to restrict my side to side vision" well, it did - for about 5 minutes - Then you get use to it. Its no big deal, It doesn't hinder you much if adjusted correctly.
When you crash - it really works. I went from 70mph to 0 mph in 4 feet at Daytona this year - head on. Not only did I walk away but I didn't even have a sore neck!
I highly recommend getting one for ANY racing , any class (and I don't even sell them)
You will thank me later :-)

Totally agreed. And speaking of head safety it amazes me how many people at driving schools have resisted spending just $25 to get a neck collar. Obviously the HANS device is on another level of safety, but for $25 why in the hell would you not drive with one???

There are kart collars and then there are much larger ones for automobiles. The big ones do more than help with g-loads in corners, they significantly reduce head and neck movement during a crash. This restricted movement of the head greatly reduces neck strain and injury. Even though we do have tall seats during an impact when the body flails around and is no longer in contact with the seat, the highback of the seat is doing nothing to restrict violent head and neck movements, the collar does.
And before you say well, you should have a 5 or 6-point harness, as an instructor I ride in lots of cars with a standard 3-point OEM belt.

they do not help significantly in crashes. They do almost nothing?
Come on, you can squish the thing with your hands. How much does your head weigh? Multiple that by what? 10g's? 50gs?
