Default HANS: How much is too much?

Considering a HANS but think it's too much money or that you don't need it because you only time trial/attack?

Saved me from major injury twice. Best $1000 I've spent.

Can a HANS device be used with any race seat?

I see that some race seats indicate that its HANS compatible, while others don't mention it. Is there a difference? Or is this just a discrepancy in advertising amongst seat manufacturers.

From what I understand, most race seats / harnesses can be used with HANS.

I think that the HANS-combatible thing is more of a marketing thing.

I know a lot of the guys in Mid-A have been researching HANS and other similar devices in depth after the recent loss of Cale (as I have started doing as well). Perhaps one of the guys there can chime in.

People at HANS recommend a plain FIA approved shell WITHOUT wings instead employing a properly fit inside net.

Safer and cheaper and can be used with any seat because it attaches to the belts. They are actually brainstorming for a product that will work with stock 3pt belts.

The Hans should be compatible with any race seat given that they are a real 5 pt seat. Issues can come up if the shoulder straps are too far apart and at the right height.

Most issues come from the harness itself.

Big things to look at are using a 2" shoulder strap instead of the 3" straps. This keeps the harness on the Hans instead of sliding off. The 3" can work, but the 2" are much better.

Here is a link to HANS for information.

If anyone has any questions give us a call. We've gone through their training and have been wearing them for the past 4 years.

Of course I got mine after a big crash. I was relatively lucky, but still have neck issues to date. (4 years later). The Sport model is less than a set of tires, and I really wish I had it on then.

A HANS compatible shell is one which is shaped to accommodate the bulk of the device. A HANS is somewhat bulky and awkward. A compatible shell will be recessed behind the neck to accommodate it.

Wings don't affect the function of the device and provide side-impact head and neck support the HANS doesn't offer in the same way as a headrest restrains the head on a rear impact. Wings make getting in and out of the seat with a HANS more difficult.

From what I've found, the Wings make it really hard to get in and out of the car. With the Hans on, in a fire, with the wings, I'd be hard pressed to get out fast. But....

Side impact protection is much better.

just make sure you get sliding tethers! It's rather annoying without them.

From the conversation over in Mid-Atlantic, it makes sense that options for side impact restraints should also be looked into if you are looking at HANS devices. What are people using for side restraints and is it realistic to install them on a street driving vehicle?
