Default Hard Dog Diagonal Question

I've read pretty much all the threads I can find about the Hard Dog roll bar.

One question I haven't seen answered though is, what is the importance of a diaganol (or two) on the bar?

Surely it strengthens the bar some, but is it neccesary? Or do most people only have it for safety requirements for one of the various racing organizations?

This is purely a "fun" car for me. Never going to be doing any wheel to wheel, time trial, etc. racing. Just autocross, HPDE, Test and Tunes, etc. and just want to add some protection. Thus is no diaganol sufficient or is it really that important?

I was thinking of going with the double diaganol previously, but I really want to keep most/all of the stock interior pieces, not lose a lot of passenger seat travel or center console access, etc. Also I would prefer to stay away from fiberglass work... so with all that my best option seems to be no diaganol. Just not sure if it is sufficient from a safety point of view. I doubt they would sell it if it wasn't though. Like I said, my thinking is that most people only have it to meet NASA requirements or whatever.

Thoughts?

Get the bar built with the removable diagonal and removable harness bar and normally run it on the street without them installed.
That will keep the value of the bar up for resale of the bar and/or the car, as most people would want a diagonal because it keeps the bar from collapsing sideways.
It also keeps your options open in case you ever decide to track the car.

I don't have any concern for resale value. I was already planning to get the lowered harness bar for if I decidced to put race seats and harnesses in...

Like I said, I just wanted to know if the diaganol actually added a substantial ammount of strength or not...

The removable diaganol seems like a waste. The car is either going to be setup to accomodate it or not. There isn't any middle ground for me.

Thanks though.

I personally wouldn't feel safe with the removable diagonal. I'd rather it be welded or not there at all.

Yeah I was thinking the same.

If anyone does ride as a passenger I will say the welded diagonal definitely cuts back on seat travel a lot. You probably lose a couple inches if you're still using the stock seat.

.

This contradicts wanting to keep the stock plastics...

Not really. From what I've seen/read, it doesn't take much to fit it. Just a little trimming of the back part of the secret compartment. Definitely seemed much eaasier than all the rest of the cutting and fiberglass work it would require to make the double diagonals fit and look decent.

This is what I'm referencing: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/851...-dog-roll-bar/

Like I said, the lower harness bar part doesn't look bad, but the double diaganol stuff looks like a pain in the ass...

Which is why I started considering the single diaganol... but it just seems to get in the way and be only to meet NASA (etc.) safety specs more than anything... which is why I'm now most interested in no diaganols, but with a lowered harness bar. If that is sufficiently strong, that is my top choice, as that would be fairly easy to retain stock plastics, and keep the most seat travel. Second preference would be double diaganol...

You absolutely cannot get the bar made with the lowered harness bar and still run the factory roll hoops. They both take up the same space behind the factory bulkhead.
