Default Helmet question

Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a helmet and need some advice. I've been to one track event so far and plan to do maybe two a year, plus maybe 1-2 autocrosses.

Can I get an SA2005 Pyrotect helmet and be all good...or should I invest in something "nicer" like a Bell M2? Will I really be able to notice the difference given how little I'll be using the helmet?

Thanks!

Just get the one that fits your head the best.

Just make sure it's SA2005 so you can use it at the track and that it fits properly. The rest is just features.

Snell ratings come out every 5 years and are current for 10. You can't buy a M/SA2000 helmet anymore, it must be a 2005 and it will be good until 2015.

SA (Special Application) helmets have fire protection, M (Motorcycle) helmets do not. You will pay extra for an SA helmet for that reason. You can tell an SA helmet right off by it's yellow chin strap (made of kevlar). M helmets straps will be nylon or similar.

You can use an M helmet pretty much anywhere fire protective clothing isn't required. Unless you need an SA helmet (fire protection required, hans device) you will find a lower price and more selection in an M rated helmet. Make sure it fits, it should be snug, tight even and shouldn't turn on your head and should be snug all around not just on your cheeks or top of your head. Everyone has a different shaped head and different helmets will fit differently. Make sure you try them on. Price should be secondary in your decision process to proper fit.

one more thing, make sure you wear it and walk around in the shop for a good 10-15 minute.

it might be great for the first minute but only a prolong testing can tell how well is the helmet built.

and please, don't order something over the net without test fitting it first, i ended up returning my stupid internet order for something nicer.

I ended up buying a Bell M2. The fit was nice and the price was right. Thanks for everyone's tips!
