Default Helmets

Anyone have any recommendations for a helmet, most likely Snell SA 2000 so I can use it at Road racing events as well as autocross? I was thinking either open face or open face with chin bar, because close face might get too hot since I am in Arizona. I think I'll be willing to spend up to $300 for an all rounded helmet (light and confortable). Any recommendations on where to buy as well? Anyone interested in trying to arrange a group buy? If so, please reply soon. I'm planning on attending my first Hot Lapping session this Sat Oct 26 and need the helmet before then. Thanks!

Go to your local motorcycle dealership & try them on. I prefer full face helmets due to increased safety. Good luck & enjoy the track!

Umm, no way you're going to arrange a group buy and get product delivered in less than 4 days

I've yet to see a motorcycle dealership carry an SA rated helmet. There are one or two of our site sponsors that carry the Bieffe line so hopefully one of them will chime in here. If not, do a search for helmets and something should turn up.

definately no time for a Group Buy. Group Buys usually offer bulk orders for discounted pricing to save on items such as shipping, or to get a larger discount from the supplier and pass it onto the customers.

You can check out what we have to offer from Bieffe here:

Motorcycle helmets will be acceptable to most tracks (not all), so a local shop could help you out given the track you are attending accepts M95/M2000 helmets. Otherwise, I can try to fit you in with what is in stock. All of the helmets I carry are SA2000 and extremely lightweight.

A distributor in CA is selling out his remaining stock of Bell M3 helmets. This is a REALLY nice helmet - lightweight and SA2000 - but it's full face. It has vents on the chin, forehead and top so I don't think it would be much hotter than an open face. It's also a great price - the cheapest I've been able to find them elsewhere is in the $430 price range. I would've jumped on it but, alas, as with most sales, he didn't have one in my size. Below is his reply to my inquiry (on Oct 15).

"The M3s on Ebay are priced at $325.00 which is master wholesale. In other words that is my cost as a distributor. I have sizes 6 3/4; 7 1/2; 7 3/4 and 7 5/8s. Please call me if you have any questions at WERKS II (818) 845-2530. Ask for Joshua he can help you with whatever questions you might have. Thank You. "

When trying on helmets, bring your driving glasses with you. If you have some.

If you're interested in a Bell M5 (snell 2002) helmet, I picked one up for $135 during a closeout special at www.mawonline.com

Everyone else sells them for $280. Very comfy and well made BTW.

fyi, that would be a 2002 year model on the M5 with a snell rating of SA2000. the next rating would be a 2005. good prices on the M5's.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all you inputs. I ordered a Simpson LX Plus Snell SA 2000 helmet on Tuesday. It is open face with a chin bar. I believe a carbon fiber/kevlar shell so should be pretty light. Got it for $257.50 including shipping. Sorry I didn't get a chance to read everyone's messages first because I needed to get this helmet by Friday as I am hot lapping on Saturday and Sunday.

FlakeyPete, maybe a full face helmet would have been a better choice. Anyone have any problems wearing glasses with a full face helmet? I wasn't sure and thought I shouldn't risk it for this weekend. The M3 does look like a great helmet and the price is awsome too. I measured my head at 7-1/4, and ordered a 7-3/8. Would a 7-1/2 be too big then? If the Simpson helmet I ordered does not fit or is uncomfortable, I might return it and try the M3.

Iceman/Schatten, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the Bell M5 was a snell M2000 rating. Does it come in a Snell SA2000 too? How much more would it cost? I actually like this helmet too, plus it comes in Silver/Platimun too. That was my first choice in color, but the Simpson I ordered will be white because there was no time to custom make a silver one.

Thanks again - hope to meet you guys in person someday!
