Default how do you get race tires to the track?

I'm hoping for some no-shows at Monday's autoX, so I'm gonna show up in the AM to try to get in. I spent the last 45 minutes trying to figure out a way to get the race wheels in the S2K, with no easy solution. (OK, I couldn't figure out a solution!)

Are you guys that are racing on race wheels trailering the s2k, having someone drive a separate car, have a race trailer attached to the s2k, or is there another way? My wife is out of town, so the option of her driving the wheels in the Jeep is out for this week.

Is anyone sticking 2 of the wheels in the trunk and tying down the lid, and squeezing the other 2 in the front seat? I also thought about putting the Kumhos on the front, driving to the event with the SO-2's on the rears and bringing the rear Kumho's- one in the passenger seat and one in the trunk (tied down). Am I gonna kill the front Kumhos if I don't drive crazy to the event?

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions!

I think most of us either trailer the car or trailer the tires. As that is not an option for you this weekend, I'd suggest you just drive to the event with them mounted and ready to go. From what I understand Kumhos or pretty durable and your not likely to cause much excessive wear to and from the event site. That is as long as we're not talking 100 miles.......although I recall someone posting they had done that on Kumhos.....in the rain no less. I'd preffer that route over tearing up the interior of the car with a bunch of tires.

Good luck and have a blast!!!

I drive all summer on my Kumhos. I only drive ~300-500 miles a month. Mostly to and from events. Last week, I drove 160 miles each way for an event. The freeway and town driving doesn't seem to wear them too bad. I figure I can buy at least 5 years of tires for the price of an additional set of wheels. When the Seattle rain arrives in Oct.-Nov. I'll put the street tires back on.

You shouldn't have any problem driving to events on your race tires.

Reassuring news, thanks Randy and Mack.

Mack- this Monday's event happens to be 45 miles away, close to that 100 miles round trip! But anyways, looks like that's the best option to go with for the rest of this season, at least. I like your trailer set up, just don't have anywhere to store a trailer until we find a house.

But if you guys notice faster rear wear than fronts on your autoX set, I kinda like my idea of driving on the SO-2's to the event. If they seem to wear evenly, then by all means I'll just drive on all 4 Kumho's to the events.

Thanks again!

Vic

I think everbody would love to have a trailer and tow vehicle and extra wheels and tires, but this is "grass roots" motor sports, for those of us on tighter budgets.

Here is what I've noticed about wear after half a season ... racing almost every weekend since June. The outside edge wears most. The wear is only slightly more on the rears than the fronts. (I run 36# front/ 31# rear, cold, racing and on the street) I also have 265s in the rear, rather than the 245s that most people use.

Keep in mind that many people will turn the Kumhos "inside out" once the wear is showing. According to most, this is not a problem with Kumhos. At the recent National Tour event, the Kumho truck was switching these for competitors who had moderately worn outside edges. I will probably do that when I put the Kumhos back on next spring.

I've been told that this cannot be done with Hoosiers.

Based on the wear that I have experienced after a few months of street driving and racing on Kumhos, I believe I will get 2 and maybe 3 seasons from the tires. I'm concerned that they may start going hard before the cord shows up.

Enjoy your first event, you'll love using race tires.

I had been driving to local events on my Kumhos. Travel is 30-40 total roundtrip miles. I was running the 225/245 setup with a stock front bar. I got over 100 runs out of the rears before they started to feel like they were loosing grip. The fronts still felt great.

On my Hoosiers, I've cut a deal with a guy to carry one of my wheels with him to events. I squeeze the other three in the car.

I have talked with people that drive Kumhos 100+ miles to the track without problems. The reason I chose the A032R

This is how I usually do it, I've got 2 sets of wheels ... One is the normal wheels and the other is the JDM optional BBS wheels. I put one set with the semi-slicks in my friend's car who doesn't race and I drive down with one set. At the end of the day, I have both sets used up happily. With ample of heavy driving and fast sprints.
