Default interested in track racing

So- got my new 2002 s2k, 2000 miles on it, and am interested in seeing what the car can do on a track. I've never done this before - a complete novice. I don't want to race, I just want to drive fast under somewhat safe conditions. What does anyone out there reccommend? I live in the Bay Area, and Jim Russell offers a performance driving program at Sears Point. Anyone out there has done it? is it worth the $700? And afterwards? are ther places that let you do laps on the track for a reasonable fee? Are there organized evens/clubs for people like me?
Thanks

come to thunderhill on friday, speedventures.net is putting on an event and there is moderate instruction for noobs. By far the best instruction I ever got was from riding/talking with peers but especially with more experienced drivers. I took the jim russel course but in hindsight it was really not worth the money to me.

The Russell Racing High Performance Driving is a hybrid driving/racing class with more emphasis placed on driving. If you want a good intro to driving on the track and if you don't plan on racing, then the class is worth the money, but if you want to learn how to race, you would probably be better off taking their Techniques of Racing class or the Skip Barber's 3 Day Racing School. After that, it's all about seat time...

Go hook up with the gang at Thunderhill. Everyone there will know YOUR car and you can go at your own pace. But be warned: you, too, will become a track junkie.
