Default Interior paint questions

Anyone have any tips for painting the interior of my race car? The car is gutted from the seats back, including all sound deadening and tar. Custom welded roll bar (not cage) is unpainted and I would like to do that as well.

I'm finding POR15 is the product of choice. Wondering if anyone has had experience with it or other interior paints and can provide any tips/tricks. Brush or spray? Tips for prep work?

Thanks

My cage builder, Piper Motorsports, recommended 'battleship grey' rattle can. They used a standard spray from Home Depot for future availability and touch ups (don't remember the exact color or brand). The dark grey reflects less in the windows and it looks good. I have touched up the driver floorboard and a few other places and it is seamless.

You've got to be generous with the cover paper to prevent overspray on the exterior and glass. The interior surfaces need to be clean but don't use a cleaner that leaves residue, like even the new 'shining' Windex. Regular Dawn well diluted in hot water works good and use air pressure and towels to dry then let it sun dry and warm before painting.

Thanks - easily available rattle can will be ideal. Could you find out the brand? Want to be sure I'm not buying the wrong thing.

Tips for cleaning are very helpful. Didn't think about that part too much.

I talked to Piper too. They told me to use the rustoleum professional. It comes in larger cans than the standard rustoleum. Should be at Homedeot or Lowes.

I just did mine myself. I went with primer> paint> then clear. I really wanted it to look nice though so I spent the extra effort. I would not recommend por15 b/c it fades with UV badly. I would recommend to spend A LOT of time with a vacuum and air blower over and over to get all the grit/junk out off all the cracks. Get some acetone to wipe down the car right before you paint it.

I just decided to take the path of least resistance....write a check to a professional. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for the tips guys. Still deciding between doing it nice and right, or quick and dirty (then doing it nice and right if/when I do a full roll cage).

No mater what you end up doing, it will get damaged and need to be touched up. If I had to do it over again, I would have rattle can'ed the interior. That will make it easier to touch up, and cheaper at the paint shop for the full car. I did a full color change, from blue to white for the full car. I just had them paint the whole car, inside and out.

I agree. The rattle can is the right way to paint the interior of an actual racecar.
