Lap timer recommendations?

Anyone out there know where I can score a good but inexpensive lap timer that will stick to my steering wheel (but come off after the track days ;) ) and also have the memory capacity to "remember" previous lap times while timing the current lap???

It won't mount on your steering wheel (which I think is a good thing, because a steering wheel is no place for a hard object to be mounted), but the best bang-for-the buck system on the market is Longacres' Hot Lap Timer. It has the ability to display last lap time, current lap progress, and your last 60 laps. You can mount the display securely and in your field of vision. If you're really stretching your budget, you can pick up just the timer and rely on the fact that 99% of the time, someone else has put a transmitter out on track already.

MM,

What ever you do, DO NOT put the timer on the steering wheel... Just imagine becoming one with the timer if the airbag ever deployed. One of the best places i've seen for placement is zip tied to the left air vent. Still a potential hazard in a crash but better then the steering wheel.

Does the lap timer have to be mounted line of site to the transmitter? I'm just wondering about placement in the S2000...

I guess you're right. I'd rather not eat the lap timer if the air bag ever went off.

The in-car portion of the timer is two parts; a receiver and a display. They are connected via a pretty long cable. The receiver has to be line of site with the transmitter, and it is pretty good at picking up the xmitter even if it is mounted at an angle. You can use zip ties to hold the receiver in place well enough, and remove it after you are done. I've never looked closely at the S2K, so I can't help you on the placement issue. On my car I can use the passenger seat seatbelt guide (on the headrest) or, now that I have a rollbar, I use that.

The in-car part of the Hot Lap system is two pieces: the display, which you can mount wherever you can see it, and the receiver, which does need line-of-sight to the transmitter. They are connected by a phone-type cord.

I zip tie the display to the center air vents, and place the receiver up against the windshield on the center of the dash, zip tied to the air vents. Others use different locations.

If you zip tie the receiver under the windshield, turn it onto its side to get a better LOS. I zip tie the control module to the left air vent.
