Default Let's talk Helmets

My Snell 2005 helmet needs to be replaced. I'll probably get a Snell 2010 since I don't think I will have it for 10 years. I do autocrosses and track days. I need something on budget (that not necessary means cheap) but comfortable. My main problem is that my current helmet a Pyrotec weights on top of my head and at the end of the day I end with a big headache. I use XL size and I don't think that the size is the problem. Also, ordering in the internet seems to be the way to go but I would really like to try them on. I live in the Upstate, SC. I could travel to Charlotte or Atlanta if anyone know a place where they have helmets in stock.

I got Bell Vortex Snell 2015 from Summit Racing for $180. It's a M not SA.

First, don't get an M helmet. Many track groups won't allow them. You should be able to get a very good deal on a 2010, with the 2015's now out.

Next, Apex Performance is in SC. You could also call them and see if they will be at a track event near you. They often do support at PCA events.

Highly recommend you try helmets on. Some are shaped for thinner style noggins (Arai), and some for rounder (Bell). I have, and am happy with a GForce. I have a rounder style head, and was looking for a large eye opening. Ymmv

Definitely SA only. Most sanctions will not allow you to run with M rated helmets.

I have a Bell full face I really like, but ended up removing the visor as it just really bugged me. Would probably go with the cheaper open face next time. Go ahead and pop for the 2015s though...you really dont know how long you will have it and it would make resale value better if you decided to get rid of it.

M wasn't in consideration. The open face is something to consider

Best to have the visor in place and protecting your face. Tire clag kicked up by a car in front can do serious damage to your eye. I've had one hit me close to the eye and it stings. Also if your car has an airbag in place best to always leave the visor down just in case.

eye glasses - check
helmet - check
hardtop - check

Got hit on the side of my face on the edge of the eye socket at Watkins Glen on the back straight headed into the bus stop. Too bad they want me to drive with the window lowered. I will admit that it was a freak incident, but there is a reason why helmets come equipped with visors.

I recall getting hit in the forehead with a piece of tire a few years back. Stung a bit! But the top was down
