For comparison's sake, an equivalently proportional power boost in an S2000 would take us to an even 300 hp.
Steve
I think we all know from the discussions regarding classing of the 04 S2000 and the re-classing of the 00-03 S2000 that power isn't the only deciding factor in classing a car. Classing cars isn't my gig, nor his. We all have opinions on where certain cars belong/ don't belong. This is one of those cases. Unfortunately, I'm speaking as a third party, so I have no strong opinions on this one.
let me rephrase my previous post:
He didn't think it would be a very competitive BS car.
Don't get me wrong, he was very happy with the car and stated that it was pretty much race ready with the beafy swaybars, big tires/ wheels, nice dampers, etc, but didn't think it would be able to go toe to toe with the MR2 turbo, 350Z, and Z4 (the most common competitors on the local scene).

Gregg, that's a heavy 2002, and a somewhat light 1999. Here's my data, using the SCCA scales at two events, about a month apart:
2001 Miata LS with ABS, 6-speed, and suspension package (in other words, everything but the hard top): 2365 with 1/3 tank of gas.
1999 Miata Sport with A/C and power steering, and nothing else: 2254 with just less than 1/4 tank of gas.
Both cars had: stock wheels, Hoosier A3S04s, stock muffler replaced with 12" turn-down pipe, Koni Sport shocks, Racing Beat tubular front swaybar, no hitch, no driver, floormats, jack, and spare removed. The 2001 was weighed at the San Bernardino ProSolo and the 1999 was weighed at the Atwater ProSolo.
Published weight of the 1999 was 2299; 2001 was 2447. That puts the Mazdaspeed "officially" at 76 pounds heavier than the 2001 6-speed. That makes some sense, given that they've added a turbo and intercooler and are using a larger radiator, along with stiffer suspension components.
Steve, Ken does have power steering.
