can you use the alumnium rings for street use or are they primarily for the track?

If they are plastic now (speculation, but I don't see aluminum melting during a track event?) I don't see how they can contribute to supporting the car in any way.

My understanding is that the force holding up the car comes from the friction between the back of the wheel and the hub - neither the lugs nor the hubs have much to do with supporting the car, but are very useful for centering the wheel properly.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I dont think your wrong.

I have seen the rings cause many problems when used on wheel centered by cone or spherical seated lug nuts. Problems that include having a wheel come off due to an inadvertent doubling up of centering rings.

Volk wheels come with two sets of mounting holes. One set has a conical seat that is meant to center the wheel as well as supply clamping force to the hub when used with conical seat lug nuts. The other set of holes has a flat seat that can only supply clamping force. When used with flat seated lug nuts the wheel needs the use of a hub centric ring to center the wheel against the hub when it is mounted.

Volk is now only supplying plastic ones. I am considering having a fabricator make me alumnium ones but am concerned that metal on metal with different expanding rates from the heat could be a bad thing. I can only assume that is wht Volk went to plastic.

The hub centric rings exist only to center the wheel for mounting. They bear no load.
keep in mind that wheels are aluminum, your rings should expand at close to the same rate as your wheels. shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I had the plastic ones from Volk. They broke into little pieces the first time at the track (basically melted, cooled and turned brittle, fell apart 1st time I took the wheels off). Used the wheels without rings for months with no issues.

The rings are not necessary, they just help with wheel mounting. If you don't use them you need to be careful to tighten down your lug nuts progressively.

I'm interested in some aluminum rings, if anyone know a commercial source. It's for the TL race car (with Enkei wheels) and we need the rings for quicker tire changes at the 25 hour enduro.

Always had Volk wheels and never used the plastic rings, and never had any problem. They serve no purpose with the standard Volk lugs.
