Default Mixing Tire Brands?

I have a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, on which I've corded the fronts. The rears still have tread, so I'd like to keep using them. However, I also would like to switch to Toyo RA-1s.

Would it be perfectly safe to run the Toyos on the front and the Michelins on the rear? They're both long treadwear R compound tires.

I don't believe the grip levels are comparable on those tires so you might find yourself with a bit more oversteer than you'd like.

Thanks, J.P. So, in your opinion, I should either buy new Michelin fronts, or replace all four?

Mark, you could try it out to be sure, but my gut feeling is that you should buy two new Toyos and sell the Michelins.

Doh!

OK, now that the fog has cleared

Get rid of the Michelins (never did like those) and buy four RA1s.

He's GOT four RA1s already. I think he's just resisting the idea of tossing out the Michelins in the rear.

depends on condition of your existing rear Michelins. Matching brand new front tires with almost worn rear tires of the same brand could also be a problem.

when you have all 4 tire the same, you are able to learn them all at the same time. you know when is the tire over heating, enough tracktion..etc.

if you have different tire front and rear, during track time you might have to think more about the differences feeling for front and rear.

not sure if you guys can understand my writing. i'm trying to express my feeling.
