Default Motons on the Track?

i know motons seem to be the best for autox because of saini(sp?)

but, i was wondering if anyone uses them for the track and what your set up was. especially springs/rates, etc... it seems everyone is in love with the JRZ in this forum. i dont really autox but would like to upgrade from my current coilover set up to motons. i mainly picked motons because my company is sponsorings a GT3 in grand am, and im expecting them to hook me up with a nice moton discount(they are authorized dealers)

thanks, brian

I think davepk is still on the motons, but I heard 3rd-hand that given what he now knows, he would choose the JRZs.

I'd probably get the Motons if price wasn't an issue. DavePK has had his 2-way Motons for years, and in the early years the installation package was not customized for the S2000 like the JRZ's were by ELDA Engineering. But performance-wise, they are both top products. I've heard that Motons are used in more racing series, but not sure. You can't go wrong either way and probably won't be able to feel the difference unless you have F1 potential.

From what I understand, they're virtually identical. Moton has the more recognized name tho.

Yes i have had the MOTONs for years. I paid a pretty penny thru KingMS for them and would not recommend going tru them for these to anyone. If ELDA's JRZ setup were available at the time it would have been what i chose. As it is the MOTONS have been amazing you cant lose with either.

Virtually all the Speed World Challenge cars run on Motons. Quite a few GAC, Rolex, and ALMS cars run Motons also. A friend of mine gave me a brief history on JRZ and Moton (and another company I can't remember the name of)...basically, the 3 owners of the separate companies were the ones that formed JRZ (each w/ their initials). They split off to start their own respective brands. My friend prefers Motons over JRZs stating they are more reliable and easier to overhaul/service. He says there's slight variations in the design that allow for this. He crews for one of the SWC teams and they run Motons. I always wondered why Motons aren't as popular as JRZs here...they both seem to be great products, unless pricing is different. Are 3-way Motons pricier than 3-way JRZs? He also stated the high-end Ohlins (he didn't mention models, but I assume in the league of the ST44/TT44 or around there) are more "consistent" in their feel, but are more difficult to service/overhaul due to the shim stacks.

You can get JRZs for around $4500. Last I heard, a similar MOTON setup will run around $7k by the time you finish getting all the mounts, collars, etc.

The Motons are different, and better... but it's subtle and you have to know what you're doing to extract the extra potential. However, many of the teams in WC/GAC when they switched from JRZ's/Penskes/etc. to Motons reported picking up as much as second - with no other changes.

If you can swing the Motons over the JRZ.... go for it. You'll have a superior shock. The main difference I see is that ELDA seems to do good job of supporting their customers, and that coupled with the cheaper price make them a more popular choice. But if you're going for all-out performance, you need the Motons!

Jason, aren't you sponsored by King Motorsports, retailers of Moton dampers?

Seriously, I'm going to have to raise the flag on that claim of 1 second difference between a JRZ and Moton with all else identical. If you had said there was a one second difference between Penske and Moton, I would have been slightly more able to swallow it because they use different mechanisms internally. But the JRZ and Moton are virtually identical in design. If you valve them to damp the same way, there should be no way to tell a difference driving them.
