Default My quest for MAXGRIP

Hello All,

Ever since I supercharged my s2k Ive had rear grip issues at autox's. Before the S/c i was running STR with No rear bar(helped a lot to keep the rear calm), 32mm front bar, and 17x9 +62mm 255 RS3's. Since the S/c I have been running in SSM for half of a year. I have used 255fr RS3's and 275r Nt05s... well those are long past finished as you can see

Since I am in SSM I can go to a Rcomp tire but I really wanted to be able to drive to the event, so I found the Nt01 would provide me the best grip at the track and still be able to drive there. My original thought was to run 275/40/17 nt01s all around (my front fenders are rolled and have no liners, 275s in the rear did not rub) which I could run on my 17x9s

Then I got to thinking.... the next size up in Nt01s is a 315/35/17 which is the same height as the 275/40/17s and Nittos run a little skinny for the size... but would that be possible????

I saw s2000junky is running 295 kumhos on 18x11s and I think cKit is running 18x11s for his SSM build, But I really wanted to keep 17s(much cheaper tires) So after talking to the guys at 949racing I decided to go with their 17x10 +72 6ulr wheels for the 315s

Well they fit! the tires are a little bulged on the 17x10s. They surprisingly fit very well in the fenders, I can get a skinny finger in between the tire and the shock tower. I will need to roll the fenders and cut the plastic bumper some but I new I was going to do that. I just really did not want to have to do overfenders.

So I tried to take pics of them on the car, it was dark and the pics were terrible. I will update with pics on the car asap!

Thanks for all the info I found on S2ki!

After roll... Yes the paint cracked and it makes the roll look wavey but it is not

Again it was getting dark as I test fitted the wheels, anyway here they are. 315/35/17 rear

Now that you're pretty much in the big boy league, why not ditch auto-x and step up to real racing?

I road race and autocross. I like the camaraderie of my local autocross club.

It's kind of an odd choice to post a thread about "MAX" grip when the tire choice is a compromise.

A softer R-comp in a narrower tire will heat up faster and provide more "MAX" grip than the NT01 (which takes a while to heat up).

Even an R6 will provide more grip in a narrower tire.

And if they're good enough to run a few hundred miles at 150 mph on track, they're good enough to drive a few miles to the local parking lot site.

There are people in the club that used to drive a few hundred miles on Hoosiers and / or V710s to Nats.

The NT01s will work pretty well on track. We have some guys who autocross and track the same car on the same tires and they work pretty well. Depending on your local autocross sites, you may have a hard time getting them up to grip if it's not warm out.

Well I average 400+ miles round trip to a (Local) autox event, so I def dont want to run hoosiers/v710s for 400 non racing miles. Not to mention the cost increase of those tires. I would have to go on a ramen noddle diet.

As far as heating up tires its 100+ deg and humid in Fl and Sc (where I mostly Autox) and I see many people spraying water on street and race tires after a few autox runs, therefore they think their tires are too hot after a few autox runs?

Ckit- what tire/wheel combo do you plan on running in SSM ? Ive been excited to see you build progress so well and more s2ks in SSM! I havent seen much about what size tires your running?

Good luck in SSM !

Mmmmm 315's!!! I feel a widebody kit coming... I almost got the APR one for this kinda thinking.

Back when I 1st started autocrossing in 2004 with my CRX, I remember buying Yok A032's to do exactly what you are wanting to do. They handled rain and heat cycling very well and did okay for autocross.

I have to admit that I quickly became dissatisfied with the compromise and stepped it up to the Victoracers... and became quickly dissatisfied with them... and stepped it up to the V710's... and then to Z214's.... and then A6's. Now I've regressed to STR. LOL

Good luck in your quest!

I'm not disagreeing about the R comp being able to drive on the street, but in the event of rain those tires will be dangerous and/or very slow to drive on.
