Default NASA TTC - Build Questions

Well I just got my license and if all goes I will be starting to run in NASA TTC in the Central Region. So, I am putting together a build plan now in hopes of catching a few races later this year.

My goal is to race at 2850lb w/ me and stock power level which should be less than 200WHP.

TTD (00-03)............................................... +7
S2K Race Car @ 2800LB
OEM Profile HT....................Forbidden-USA
Roll Cage / Bar...................??????
Seats.............................??????
5 Point harness...................??????
Non-Staggered Wheels 17 x 9 +63...TSW Interlagos
Tires - Hoiser A6 - 255 Max...............................+13
Fire Extinguiser...................Any
Weld Upper Control Arm Mounts
Oil Jet Bolts (2001 and Earlier)
Exhaust System.....................Berk Race / Custom.....+2
Test Pipe.............................................. ...+1
Front Sway Bar.....................Moddiction.............+2
Rear SwayBar.......................2006+
Carbotech Pads.....................XP12 / XP10
OEM / Blank Rotors
Coilovers..........................KW V3's................+5
Aftermarket Springs.......................................+2
Front Splitter.....................WASP................. ..+3
Rear Wing..........................APR GTC-200............+4
Offset Upper Control Arm Bushings..GT Motoring
Baffled Oil Pan....................Canton
Clutch.............................CC STG4
Lightened Flywheel.................CC or AP1
Aftermarket Radiator...............Any
Fuel Accumulator / Surge Tank......Radium / Fullblown
Valve Springs......................Crower - BC00405
Motor Mounts.......................Hardrace

Total Points is 39 so I should still be classed in TTC and hopefully with a good driver the car will be competitive ;-)

If all goes well in TTC then I would like to move to door to door but I need to spend some time at some events to determine what is running in my area.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry but I think you missed the double asterisk note for the base classing of the AP1. You start out with 14 points.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

For tires size, you need to go by the base class too so being in TTD its a 245. Running a 255 will cost you an additional point so the A6's would be +14 total

Be very careful with the hard top. If you use something other than OEM, you're going to have to prove it has exactly the same size and shape. Not close to OEM, but exactly the same. There is a large thread on the NASA forums about this, approx 1-2 years old

When you do harnesses, probably 6 point is better than 5. And think about HANS device. If you're gonna use one, make sure to order Hans belts.

I commend you on the fire extinguisher. Think about halon, a little more expensive, but much less messy if you need to use it. Also, even though its not required for TT, be sure you meet all the mounting and tech specs for race cars, or you'll get failed at annual tech time.

Using a 2006 rear sway will cost you points. Not sure if the sway bar changes are worth it on an AP1.

The lightened flywheel and valve springs may be points too, I haven't looked at the rules on free mods lately. Just remember, if its not an approved free mod; you have to add points

You can have the setup you posted even with the extra 7 points with a few changes.

First ditch the sway bars and use springs to set roll rates. 2 points back.

Second ditch the KW for a non reservoir shock and get 2 points back.

Third get a dyno reclass and get the 3 points back for exhaust and tp.

Now as stated, the 255 will be an extra point. I don't think it will fit well on a 9 inch wheel anyway since it is a massive cheater tire and is actuall 11" wide. So get a 245 for 13 points or even a 225 for only 9 points.

Also using ap2 sway on ap1 will cost 2 points (reverse is not true though). But you only take sway points once. So if you do keep the modiction front for 2 points, you can mod the rear as well for free.

Last, the forbidden top is based on the oem mold so you should be ok there.

what ndogg said and also I would leave the valvetrain/fuel/engine alone mostly unless its been done.

I ran TTC with a 9300+rpm redline for 2 years on the stock valvetrain (with ap2 retainers) with no problems.
You shouldn't need a surge tank either I never had fuel starve running as low as 4bars.

Great info, thank you very much!

I have updated for +14 which have changed quite a few items.

Thank you for the heads up, I found the detail on swapping parts from earlier models to late models but not the other way around. The way I read it originally is that you could freely swap from an AP1 to Ap1 but not AP2 to AP1..........

As for the retainers it is on the freebie list under section C.21. This was only a precautionary, not necessary. Under section D.2 they allow lightened flywheels.

Safety devises, yes not seen on the above but on the list is a Halon System, Hans device as well as other items like a Transponder and GPS Laptimer.

Looking at the details again it appears that if I run a set of 245 DOT street tires I should be able to get away with less than 20 total points. I may just run TTD to get my feet went then class up. It should save me a lot of setup time and get me on the track much quicker.

ndogg, one thing that I am still confused on is the "Third get a dyno reclass and get the 3 points back for exhaust and tp." Can I get points back from being under powered? I would assume a stock AP1 is around 15.5:1 LB/WHP.

If you have a dyno reclass you do not count any points under the engine or weight sections as they are built into the reclassification.

And every dyno reclass I have ever heard of for an S2000 was very beneficial compared to the original base-class system. From what I have seen, a TTC reclass will be around 13 lb/hp and a TTD** will be around 13.5 lb/hp. But if you do reclass and plan to run in D you have to make sure you let him know that before he gives you your reclass because the one I got would not be legal in a final class of D.

When you do a reclass you have to provide all the specific info they state in the documentation but the basic formula is you tell him any 2 of the following 3 variables and he tells you the final one (HP, WT, Class)

Dsddcc: if you decide to do dyno reclass, you can PM me. I just had one done and there was a specific format he wanted it in, which I can send you. Also, there is a new rule where you must declare the exact size of your engine. I can point you to that also.

Basically, the s2000 doesn't make much horsepower from add on mods, they just add points. However some engine mods are very useful for loosing weight (exhaust, TP, intakes, maybe header). So what a lot of people do, is to do a dyno reclass. You specify 2 of the following 3: base class (including # of stars), HP, and weight. They will then send back the other variable.

For example, you could ask to stay in TTD with 2 stars at say 210 wheel HP, and they will send you a weight you must always be at or above. Then you take no points for the engine mod section. Technically you also take no points in the weight section, but that's misleading as you can also never be below your stated weight, even if you had points to use on it.

Also, you could ask for a TTC base class no stars reclass, if you so desired.
