Default New To Compitition

Hey I want to start Auto X and Road Racing. So what is open to me. I dont have a roll cage but, buying a helmet is no problem if thats what it requires. Are there any websites where i can find out about possible chances I can get to Auto X or Road race? I live in Kentucky so places for me to attend would have to be on east coast. Any good websites where I can learn some information too?

Thanx in advance

I would suggest visiting the site listed above. Find the closest track and simply attend the next event. Everyone is new to this at some point and I'm sure that all of the experienced people will be very happy to help you learn the ropes.

In general all you really need to race is your car, your license and ~$25.00 cash for registration. Most places will have extra helmets for people to use until you can get one of your own

This criteria would be sufficient for autox event but not a track day.

The SCCA and NASA are good places to start, but also look into local car clubs, i.e. the ones that do driving schools and events, not the ones that shine their cars in a parking lot.

There are many levels of competition and high performance driving, each require a different level of car preperation, safety equipment and skill. From cheapest to most expensive.

Solo 2 (autocross): Single car timed laps at no more than highway speeds, usually in a parking lot with cones. Requires only an approved helmet. Cheap, low risk of car damage.

High Performance Driving School: Not really competition, but lets you drive on a real track at track speeds with instructors. Usually require helmet and depending on orginizer rollover protection.

Solo 1: Timed laps on track, no passing, essentially one car, but really spaced out in a run group. Requires helmet, Solo 1 roll bar (search for Elda Rollbar) with required helmet to bar clearance. I think it requires some sort of driver qualification at a reconized driving school or racing license.

Road Racing: Wheel to wheel racing. Typically requires full safety gear, helmet, fire resistant clothing, fire suppression, full roll cage, etc. Typically requires a racing license. Expensive, good chance you'll eventually have to fix the car from racing incidents.
