Default Newbie Question on Helmets

I will be participating in my first Track event on the 29th. of January and I was wondering, do I need an open faced of full face helmet for the event? It is to be Snell 95 or Snell 2000 certified but I'm not sure what type I need.

Any advice on helmet selection would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Buy a "SA" rated helmet (SA2000 is the latest as of now). Some organizations require it.

If you plan on ever doing SCCA Solo 1 or 2 with the OE steering wheel (airbag) you may want to go open face. While they're not yet excluded, full face helmets are under some scrutiny. The story is on www.SCCAforums.com home page if you're interested.

Please take the time to go to the web site link and do some reading.

http://www.smf.org

Open or closed is up to you, but for many of us who don't care about autox and live to drive the track an open face helmet is just half of a helmet, why bother?

If you're on the track... I've said this before but I've had stones and rubber come through the window and hit me in the face when I had my visor up.

And no I wasn't in a spin

Purchase from the manufacturer whose helmet best fits your head. And since you can't try helmets on online, don't buy from a website -- find a physical shop that sells helmets and buy there.

Since you can't use a HANS without a rollbar/cage, seat and harness, there's a lot more to budget for than just a helmet

I always thought the same thing, then I bought my G-force...

I went to Racer Wholesale's web site and read all the instructions about how to measure my head. I cut a strip of thick paper 3" wide and wrapped it around my head in the suggested spot, then took it off and measured it. Then I went to Safe Racer's web site and bought it because of their offer of free shipping.

This is my 4th helmet purchase because I also ride motorcycles, and the first one done at someplace other than a physical store.

So how did it work out? Well for me and the G-force helmet it worked out perfect. This thing fits my head better than my $500 Shoei...

Can anyone confirm the difference between bike and car helmet? I always thought it was mainly due to fire protection and motorcycle helmets didn't have nomex lining that car helmets do. Anything else? I've been using my bike helmet for track days, not sure if I should spring for a dedicated car helmet.
