Thanks for the offer plucas. I installed OpenFOAM on a Win 7 and Ubuntu machine and I've played around with the included examples but I haven't been able to get a decent car model loaded (models in wrong format). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What file format(s) do you need, Rob? A few years ago, I downloaded an S2000 model in the STL format. I was able to open it in SolidWorks, but didn't try importing it into a meshing program.

Here's the website and sample s2000 model: 3D CAD Browser - AP1 S2000.

Use it on Ubuntu if possible. It is quicker for meshing and solving than running on windows. It is best to have a car model in a CAD format of some sort. I use ProE and Solidworks. Then from there save it as a stl in the ascii format. Starting with a stl makes it much more difficult since it is facet geometry and cannot be changed easily in CAD. The models that are from the sites like below usually have holes in the surfaces and have to be cleaned up before being usable for cfd. The surfaces have to be "watertight"

I would start by making an ahmed model and work on your mesh and setup to properly set up the case. The ahmed model should be used to correlate your cfd analysis to wind tunnel testing data. I can provide the model and data if needed. The ahmed data is all over the internet including dimensions for the model.

After that, your best bet is buy a model for an s2000 (forget the site, it is at my house and can post later) and pay/download the iges model. From there, you would need to be made watertight with surfaces. I have done it this way and also modeled cars from scratch (very time consuming).

That site isn't too bad, but I have not received very high quality models from it. There is a better site I will post when I get home.

I pm'd plucas about obtaining his Miata modeling info. The main problem with the free S2000 models is they are all top down which wouldn't translate to an S2000 race car. The Miata model with top up would be much better. I'd love to have one with the top up but windows open like most race cars run.

Replied.

This is the best place for car models imo, but they do not have a S2000

Modeling up an s2000 would be the best bet. Then you can model it with top up and windows open with a driver. This would be very time intensive and computer intensive once you run the analysis. My meshes can be very large (depends on the analysis and what I am trying to achieve) and will take a while to compute, especially on a normal computer.

Has anyone been able to find a quality 3D CAD model of the S2K which I could use to engineer aero parts? I've been considering having the car scanned, but don't want to spend the money if someone has already scanned the car and created a 3D model. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
